I dunno about anyone else here, and I know there are a few n00bs about, but when I put something up for criticism, I personally don;t mind people being brutal about it ...

It seems to me that on other sites, what I would take as a good point and constructive has been taken as an attack a started a fullon flame war ....

And of course the other thing is that if I'm posting a WIP, it means that GENERALLY I'm not happy with it and want peeps to tell me exactly what's wrong with it instead of "OOOO w0w, you;re so COOL, TEACH ME" and the like.

Just wondering what peoples attitudes towrads a good hard CRITTING is.

Personally, if I post a WiP, I want people to tell me everything that they don't like about it. I won't promise to make every change that people suggest, but I want to hear everything.

And I expect people to want me to do the same to their work. If I see a piece of work that is near-perfect, I will do my best to find even the smallest imperfection in it (and suggest how to improve it)

However, it should all be constructive - not just "it looks crap", but "it looks crap because of this, and this is how I think you could improve it"

Seems to me that you want to know where to go with it next thats why you post WIP, so when people are brutal you know that they want to see better - and I would hope that the brutality has a point so that it can get better.

There is definitely a difference between good critiquing and bad.. Because visual effects are supposed to be real, they need to be able to fool the eye. It's also the only way to learn! To post stuff that you think looks ok, but there's 'something' missing, but don't know what it is. If you are aiming for realism, look around at the sky and clouds and how things interact with each other. Of course, these days some things are hyper real.. Matrix shots, exploding spaceships, etc.. But all the colors and lighting and saturation need to match to pull off a convincing composite.

So if I do critique a WIP, I'm being honest, and don't take the comments hard! Everyone has to start at the bottom. The only way you'll get to the top is trying hard and ask questions.
