First off, is it going to be a *story* with actors, dialog etc, or more of a depicted event, without any real story, sort of like the vfxtalk challenges? Check out this short film http://akryls.free.fr/. No story there, just beauty. :)

Here's the idea that I mentioned earlier, that a friend and I have been discussing for a bit now....

Mechwarrior

Using a mixture of live-action, machinima (from the various mechwarrior/commander games) and CG, make a story based in the Mechwarrior universe.

This would be combining so many different elements that there would be a lot of compositing work.

This would be more of a matter of VFXTalk people working on a project that we're running at this end, so I can understand if people don't want to go this route (if people don't, I still may be asking at a future point if anyone wants to be involved...)

Anyway, would love to hear thoughts on this idea.

it sounds like a more realistic goal ;) ... to concieve, develope and bring together a short from people with no face to face contact and sharing HUGE files would seem a tad unattainable....

If Hugh and co keep it all together from a central point, then the willing VFXTalker's can get involved in all the compositing shots ;) ... good experience :) ...

What does everyone think ??

Cheers

I wouldn't be able to promise when it would start properly, if we did go for my suggestion - Ed and I are currently working to finish up our current film (with Ed as Producer/DoP and me as Director), but that should be in the next month or so, and Ed's already starting to think about plot for the Mechwarrior film...

Oh, and we are also looking to get official permission to do this - so if anyone know anyone who's been involved in any of the Mechwarrior/commander games then please do say - I want to know who to get in touch with about this, as ownership has changed hands so many times in the past few (10...) years...

I´ve always wanted to be involved in a movie thats based on the Warhammer 40K universe. Preferly with Space Marines so u dont have to rely on actors.

If your not familiar with warhammer 40k try this link:http://www.warhammer.com/40kuniverse/40kuniverse.htm

And thers a wide variety of short novels availeble that could serve as a base fo a screenplay adoption

I've always wanted to bring a Peirs Anthony Novel to life myself.

On a Pale Horse :
One of my faves(I like em all)
Its about a guy who Mistakenly Kills the Grim Reaper and has to fill his shoes.

Book Description
When Zane shot Death, he learned, too late, that he would have to assume his place, speeding over the world riding his pale horse, and ending the lives of others. Sooner than he would have thought possible, Zane found himself being drawn to Satan's plot. Already the Prince of Evil was forging a trap in which Zane must act to destroy Luna, the woman he loved...unless he could discover the only way out....

sounds like a great story - although I wouldn't be able to read it without thinking of 'Mort' by Terry Pratchett....

I think for this project, though, we're probably going to be looking at something that's less plot based and more effects.... Maybe something like a music video could be good....

why not a Terry Pratchett story
or based on a Terry Pratchett novel
at least we will know that it will be very funny

Probably mainly for legal reasons....

Also, a lot of the suggestions going around on here are much more whole films that would just have a bit of compositing - rather than something that loads of people here can get involved in....

Ah well, while I thought the Mechwarrior idea could have been a good one, I really don't think it'll be going ahead after I read this article (http://www.pcgameworld.com/story.php/id/1262/).....

OKAY guys allow me to formally introduce myself a little more. My name is ben and i live in massachussetts. I've been interested in movie FX for as long as i've known they've existed. I've been learning Maya (top of the line 3d graphics program) over the past 10 month (thanks to the guys at www.simplymay.com) I've been learning AfterEffects for about 8 months and premier for about 2 years. My brother makes electronice music.

Now for a movie i recently did some minor VFX for (some alien ship flying around blowing stuff up) and for it I did a little collaborating over the net. Its possible but bandwidth becomes a big issue. Another issue i've encountered with putting a job offer like this on a message board is that there will be people that sign up for alot of work, and then dissapear without warning and won't come back for months.

If you guys are willing to overcome all of these problems then it would be possible to make a hella cool short. If we wanted to make a music video i'm sure we could get some cool electronic music from my bro, with his consent over getting rights to use it. I can make some cool 3d myself and i know a bunch of guys (with much more maya talent) from simplymaya that would help on a project like this. I think we would need to agree on an idea, find a writer among the group, and from there we could find a Project leader or director or something to start assining jop positions. I do beleive this is possible, and would be ALOT of work. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in.

Oh and btw i would LOVE to work on a project like this.

a VFXTalk.com --> simplyMaya collaborative project sounds like a great idea!!...

Ill get in contact with the guys at SM and see what they think ...they do the 3D...we do the comping ;)

Anyone else interested ...

Cheers

These projects can be great if there is good organisation, but personally I think that when projects reach a certain complexity and are composed of many elements from differing parties you simply feel the need to have proper contact with people.

Just keep in mind how much work you will be planning for this piece and remember to maintain an "internet managable size".

In practice things can get arkward.
