Hi,

I'm a compositor since 5 years in Montreal (you can see my c.v. in 2D Employees) and i found it a bit difficult to find jobs in Canada. The reason why i start this topics is to find a way to know which jobs is offered in Canada for compositors. So, i think i will begin by a list of post-production facility that i know in montreal. If you are interested to participate to that topic, it will be very appreciate. If you work for a post-production facility and you know they are looking for people, please post...This is the reason for that topics because like i read in other forums, finding a jobs in post-prod facility in Canada is very difficult, except for the lucky peoples who have a lot of connections.)...In conclusion, i create this topic to help no-connections compositor find a job, you can see this topic like an association of compositor (Did that exist???), sharing jobs opportunity, knowledge, etc...A last thing, everybody is welcome, posting worldwide jobs will be appreciate too....

P.S: Sorry if my english look bad, i'm a french Canadian:))

Here's the list:

Big Bang FX/Animation (Montreal, Quebec) www.bbfxa.com

(Where i'm working, they looked now for senior and mid-senior inferno/flame/flint compositor and maybe for combustion and shake artist...)

Meteor Studios (Montreal, Quebec) www.meteorstudios.com

Hybride Technologies (Piedmont, Quebec) www.hybride.com

Cinegroupe (Montreal, Quebec) www.cinegroupe.com

Buzz FX (Montreal, Quebec) www.buzzimage.com

I hope this topics will help poor compositor :) find a good job...

A last questions...

Everybody knows webpage like VFXJobs, VFXtalk, VFXpro where employers post compositor jobs???

Im looking on the web and i'm unable to find other sites than these three...Thanks

Hope again to hear from you!!!

I have a list of companies I regularly check in the area I want to work. For example, if I'm looking for work in Vancouver, I'll check the websites for the companies there. There are not many, but they all have websites, and at least a phone number that you can call now and again.

Vancouver:
Toybox (http://www.compt.com)
Lost Boys Studios (http://www.lostboys-studios.com/)
Northwest (http://www.nwfx.com/)
Rainmaker (http://www.rainmaker.com)

and a couple smaller ones that I can't remember at the moment.

If I'm looking for work in London or Sydney or LA or San Francisco, I'd do the same, make a list of all the companies I'd like to work for there and send them a reel (depending on if they're hiring).

VFXPro does help narrow the field down a bit, but sometimes the best thing to do is to be pro-active.

Good luck!

I'm curious as to whether or not union membership is required for work in the US for compositing jobs. My son is looking for work and is travelling to TN, NY, Toronto just to name three and is personnally handing out his demo reel. He heard there was a "war" between the US film industry and those in Canada and other places. If one works in Canada, he is virtually blackballed in the US. He found out later today though that the compositing "family" is so small it does not fall into this "fued" between the US industry and those outside the US.

This seems a bit vague, but I was wondering if anyone else heard about this.

No, there are no unions for visual effects (that I know of). The only one that I recall was one for ILM, but I think it was a camera union. Someone from ILM might be able to clarify. The only union-like entity is the Visual Effects Society, but even they are not a union, it's a workers guild, and they have global members.

I would be wary about personally handing out reels to companies. That is, going to their place of work and handing a reel to the receptionist. One, the receptionist won't look at your reel, so the recruiter won't know who handed it off, and two, recruiters are extremely busy and usually don't meet people coming in to hand off their reels face to face. I'd save the travel money and instead, send reels to other parts of the country that you won't be visiting but have interest in working there.

There is no war between the US and Canada in regards to the film industry. There are incentives for companies to do work there (tax breaks, etc), but just because you work in one country it does not mean you can't work in another. The only limiting factor is professional experience, which is required for a foreigner if they want to work in the states without a degree.

The compositing field is very small, even though there are many people in it! Tough to describe exactly.

Thank you for the information. My father may have said that I have heard of a "war in the industry," what I was referring to was the "Runaway Productions" issue. I had gotten some information from a friend that such guilds as the IATSE, DGA, and WGA have put up a strike against Canada and Romania. (I think there are others as well, but I don't remember them.) I was just wondering if compositors had their own union, and if so, were they a part of the Runaway Productions Alliance as well as the strike against the such countries.
I have heard from another source that has verified that compositors do not have their own unions.

As to the animation guild ILM is part of, I was told it was Local 16. I was also told that there is TAG 839 which covers a great number of animation companies.

As for my wanting to hand in my reels, I wanted to do this because I would literally be "in the neighbourhood." Currently I'm on a road trip that brings me to Knoxville, TN; Brooklyn, NY; and Montreal, QC; and I will be passing through Toronto, ON on the drive back home. The primary reason for the trip wasn't to personally hand out the reels, however, since I'm already here, I thought it wouldn't hurt to visit some companies to get a good idea of its location as well as possibly dropping off a reel and resume. I pretty much figured that the recruiters would be busy, so I never really expected to meet with them, face-to-face. But the way you had put it, I'm starting to wonder. Would it actually hurt, more than help, to personally hand these in?

Thanks again for the info and the help.

In many job postings they specify, "NO PHONE CALLS OR DROP OFFS WITHOUT APPOINTMENT!"

I think it's generally frowned upon, and actually less effective than sending the reel in by mail, because it can be annoying for a busy studio.

I wouldn't even consider to think about hiring someone who writes post like yours no matter how much profit or whatever I could gain from that.

Hello

I am not writing to get help about getting a job in compositing, but to know if there has been some changes since this thread was created about how difficult it was to get a compositing job in Canada.

In 2007, would you say that you have had some opportunity, more contracts related to this field.

Just to let you know , I am inquiring before attempting a career move in this wonderful field and possibly attend a specialized school in Montreal.

Thank you for your time and have a nice day!

Regards

Pierre

Bobman, I think it depends from company to company. Yes i think you'll need a decent command over the language of choice in the studio as communication is an important part of the workflow. Which country are you residing in? Aren't there any good vfx studios there that you can apply in?

Hi,

We are shooting a music video for a band called Army of Me. The concept is a couple playing a board game in the room, and the band playing the rock song in a room (in a white room that we are going to build) and the walls around them are going to explode. Much like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdVv90poz08

We will be using a set FX designer to build a scaled model with breakaway walls that we are going to blow through with a battering ram and debris mortars.

We are enlisting the services of Final Cut NY to edit this piece. We will be shooting on the RED camera. We have an amazing DP who has worked with Snoop Dogg and the Roots most recently. So we have a lot of talented people on this job already. The song can be found here:

www.myspace.com/armyofme (http://www.myspace.com/armyofme) -The song is called "Perfect."

This song will be featured in campaigns for The Summer Olympics on NBC, iTunes, and AT&T so there will be a lot of exposure. We will also be cutting it into a short film to be sent around the world for festivals. We may also be working with the Mill for part of the post process.

The problem is that we are working with a tiny post budget and are looking for someone who can provide a quick post turnaround so we can get this video out for all of these campaigns and most importantly on MTV and Vh1.

We are looking for a strong visual FX compositor.

You can email me at BryanReis814@gmail.com and I can give you more details.
