hmm, so it's about modelling in 3d... making super realism...?

No....

It's about painting/modelling backgrounds - whether this is modifying photos or creating in 3D

hmm, so basically i can do matte painting, without doing any 3d modelling, & without even knowing how to paing/draw... -- but just by cloning buldings or trees or whatever...?

I wouldn't say that. It requires quite a bit of skill to pull it off convincingly.
Can we move this to the beginner's forum?

kokoloko,

Go down to your local Borders and in the Entertainment/Movie section look for a book called "The Invisible Art". It is the finest book on matte paintings for film visual effects. Very worth the buy. Every vfx artist should have it on their shelf.

The Invisible Art (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0811831361/qid=1071348698/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-4487642-1036753?v=glance&s=books)

I was too. The best way to learn is to research and read a lot. This book will answer any question you could ask about matte painting and more. You won't find another resource like it on the web. The materials are well worth the money. I understand your situation, but I have found investing $50 in a book like this one is more valuable then paying $1400 a class at a decent college on computer graphics. Keep in mind that being a recent graduate I would never recommend a book you would just chuck away in a year. This information will never become obsolete. Please don't get me started on the importantance of reference materials...

Please consider,

Russell

I remember back in the old days, when we had this thing called a library.. I used to go there and get books for free. It was great. And then I could bring them back whenever I wanted!

What marvels of technology.

Would'nt you be hard pressed to find decent recent titles like this in a libriary? Anyhoo...you really cant go wrong with buying a good book, a wealth of knoweldge.
