If you're a max user, you'll definitely want to check out Mudbox, from Autodesk.

Actually Mudbox has always tended to integrate more easily with maya than with max. It's only since Autodesk purchased Mudbox that they have been bringing the max support/integration up to par with that of maya.
But 2009 is going to be pretty ridiculous. If you're interested, there are some videos here that are worth a look.
