Any one can say, which is the best dynamics engine other than maya ,
whether xsi or houdini?

in house is the best, but all depends what for. out of those two i would say Houdini because it node base and can work with complex scenes and renders.:niceone:

SOFTIMAGE | ICE is more flexible and fast than Houdini
but, both are great too.

hello
the tools are not as important as the result.........
-ILM use 3dsmax to creat earthquik for 2012 ..
- digital domain use houdini
but that looks like they used the same tools ;)

houdini.. why? because it have all that you need inside the software and you don't need any addons and etc.. It's perfect for big projects.
When I need to use a smart system I use Houdini for big team work. For some little projects all that I need is thinking particles :) he-he

HI guys doesn`t mean to spoil any software............. but fact is that 3ds max provides all the vfx solutions like Fluids and Dynamics and the no. one vfx tool is thinking Particles ...i know that max is not much powerful for advance character based pipelines but for vfx stuff its very good. The extreme example of its power is 2012 in which PIXOMONDO uses TP for massive RBD`s ...and SFD`s deforming mesh and i don`t know why 3ds max is not so much popular internationally ?

I don't think so. 3DS is a very popular software around the world, every second cg-artist know it! 3DS is the software №1 in Russia!

wow that`s cool............ but search all the big vfx houses in careers section for VFX Artist there will be MAYA or Houdini there in most of the cases !

As you can see above my avatar, im a bit of a Houdini fanboy. :D
My personal view is this:
3ds max is good at VFX, but that is through plug-in after plug-in. Out of the box 3ds max leaves a lot to be desired. PFlow is quite a nice system for particles, when it comes to reactor, I find it very lacking.
3ds max also requires a lot of scripting to achieve certain aspects of paticular shots. Not everyone can write scripts, so thats another hurdle for some people.
Houdini on the other hand, caters for all people.
Houdini dynamics is a very robust system. Also a fully customizable system to achieve whatever parameters you need, without the need of writing scripts. Doing things like creating a chain of microsolvers to pull of a specific effect. The downside is with the masses of data that you can create, it can really slow the dynamics solving process down.
Also all aspects of Houdini are fully interchangeable with each other, which means piping data from one part of Houdini into another, is a very simple operation. That means you can get back to work as quickly as is needed.
Also if some scripting is needed, then you can drop into vops. Vops is visual scripting. That means if you know a little maths, and understand what things like for loops are, you can create a script without needing to know the written syntax of traditional scripting.
Each to their own. Certain houses use certain applications due to their personal pipline. Each has it's pro's and con's, and effectively they all get the job done, and at the end of the day, that is what ultimately counts.
I have to say, I came from 3ds max to Houdini, and I found the learning curve to be like running headlong into a brick wall. Nowadays though I find 90% of the time, if I had to try and r&d some effects in 3ds max or Maya that I do in Houdini, I would'nt know where to start. :p
Cheers :)

I like Houdini, really. BUT! If I want to use it for commercial use:
Houdini Master 10 - $9200 (no matter that they said $7999),
3DS+TP+FumeFX =~ $5500
BTW the thread was focused on Houdini and Softimage's ICE ;)

Personally I would still prefer Houdini. Houdini has all those things already, and an incredible amount of other things as well. VFX shots go much deeper than using just TP and FumeFx. :)
As for the Softimage side of things. I cant make a fair comment on that, as I have only played around with the free trail, and that was a long while back.

Does it really matter? I mean in the end the studio working on the project will probably still rewrite the interface for the software, make their own tools for it, link it up to renderman etc etc. Thats what DD did to houdini for 2012, they wrote their own rbd solver using Bullet.
As a single user...I prefer houdini though, but I bet xsi works well too.
