Hi all!

I've been experimenting with a nice, if unspectactular effect, which I've first seen in the 'hp+you' spot from method.

It's nothing special, but I loved the mood of the hp clip so much (great choice of music, too), so I had to try and reproduce the effect.

Here it goes anyway...

Hmmm...uploading the clip didn't work, so here's a link: http://www.slashcafe.com/clips/clouds.avi

I love the effect you did! very smooth!

Is it possible that you roughly tell me how it is done please? I just wanna learn.. is it masking many layers?

thanks

Congratulationes. It looks great. I will love if you could post the workspace so we can see how you did it, or tell us how to do that effect.
Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words... ;)

And yes, it's basically just a lot of semi-opaque, masked layers, animated to move toward the camera, all of them travelling with different speeds, while one layer remains in the background.

As I told you: drop dead simple. It's just that the effect looks so nice.

Here's a pic of the viewports:

Um...something I forgot to mention: this effect works best if the clip's footage is moving towards the camera as well.

Here's a screenshot of the schematic view:

...one more thing I forgot: here are the links to the original clips from method studios:

Thanks. for telling us how to do it. I just have one question, is all the footoge at same speed? or did you move the starting point of the video clip of each mask?
And again thanks. And keep the good work.

heya, thanks for sharing renderizer!

hmm... from what i see from the HP ads, i think the clips are all moving at the same speed...just the same clip duplicated many times and masked with different transparency or brightness settings applied...

thanks again! cheers

IceMan23b: no - the starting point for all masks is exactly the same, just the end location is different, so they are moving at different speeds.

hmmm, won't seem to open on any of my players or my NLE. What codec is it?

Ooops, sorry - should have mentioned that it's Xvid encoded.

Great looking effect. I like it!

I got however stuck trying to duplicate it. I can't seem to transform the masks in Z-axis, only X and Y. I'm using a 3d composite with a footage and a rect.mask-operator, but neither the mask object or the operator will travel in Z.

Can you shed some light for me?

Thanks.

Masks can't be moved in Z.

You'll have to translate the entire layer, where each layer holds only one single mask.

Ah. I misread the posts above and thought that the whole scene used a single mask operator (in a single layer) and that the mask objects were translated.

Hi BulletProof!

First off: a hearty welcome to VFXTalk!

P.S.:greetings from western austria..maybe you (and some others in here remember me...simplymaya does that ring a bell ?)

Yes, it does indeed, even though it's been a while since I used to hang around at SimplyMaya, as I have almost completely stopped Mayaing... ;)

And thanks a lot for your comment - appreciated! :D

BTW: your friend from the north was actually born in Steyr, near Krems...long time ago...
