member name: Snarkle

Software used: AE, Combustion, Photoshop, Lightwave

Comments: Combustion was used for its particles and Lightwave was used to make the explosion cloud and ground. The final render was done in AE, as a matter of fact, I think it is still rendering.

Hey all,

This is my second entry in the VFX challenges and I must say it was a pleasure blowing up one of your fair cities...some day I hope to blow up more....(insert diabolical laugh)....

All compositing was done with Photoshop and After Effects 6.

Particles were done in Maya 5.

COMMENTS: The backplate was painted to make an 'destroyed' version, then displaced and color corrected. A transition from plate1 to plate2 was done with a pre-rendered shockwave matte. Particle passes were rendered out with mattes to make the explosion itself, then comped over the rendered backplate. That was given final polish by extending the sky and ground and given a camera move, adding flares for the sun and explosion, and adding film grain.

It was fun! No people were harmed making this, which is good.

SOFTWARE USED: Combustion and Photoshop
COMMENTS: This is my first attemp so i don't know how exactly to explain. But it's basically two versions of the cityscape (before/after). Explosions and "meteor" in c*'s particles system. Some mattes, color correction and a new sky.

I used 3ivx to encode my .mov -- please, let me know if there's something going wrong with to open it.

SOFTWARE USED: After Effects, Paint Shop Pro 5, Cinema 4D, Illusion 1
COMMENTS: Well, it isn't "total" anihilation. But I thought, comping in explosion-footage into city-footage would be boring. So I came up with the idea of adding water to the show. The exposion was done using Pyromania Pro and explosion footage from framepool.de, from wich I used only the demo-samples. I also used footage of a river which I shot with my DV camera to create all the water. The destruction of the structure was done via 3D in Cinema 4D. Splashes, mist and rain were done in Illusion. The whole scene was comped in AE in which I also did the water animation. The shot was produced in HD, basically to do the movement, and took about one week of interrupted work to accomplish. Since I started very late, the shot is still very rough. I would have added a lot more spashes, mist and detail. Of course, there was no time for a soundtrack either. Also, the color correction is not as I would have liked it.

Hi, here is my 10 seconds of destruction. I basically used this challenge to help me learn Shake. And well, of course it is also fun to blow stuff up.

I used Shake for the compositing, Maya to make fire, Photoshop for clouds and destroying the buildings and After Effects to make lightning. I would have preferred to make a real fire and shoot it with my mini dv camera but unfortunately it needs to be fixed, so I used some 3D.

Good luck to you all, so far they look great.

Jim

AfterEffects and Photoshop

I made the matte painting and image seperation in Photoshop.
All the animation was created in AfterEffects. The smoke is stock footage that was color correct along with other parts of the city.
I used a roto spline to reveal the image after the shock wave pass.

Everything is 2D, No 3D was use in the project because of limited time.

hope you enjoy it.
Cheers

MEMBER NAME: Epsilon

SOFTWARE USED: 3ds Max and Premiere Pro

COMMENTS: It has been some quite fun to make this "little" nuclear blast. I used 3ds Max for the main modelwork and Premiere Pro for editing, putting together the matte composites, and adding the lens flares. Once I had applied the displacement maps, it got rather tedious as the renders exceeded 1 minute/frame. After creating such sequence I was tempted to add some music. I am glad I found this challenge before it was too late! Enjoy!

MEMBER NAME: Paule & tobyx

SOFTWARE USED: Photoshop, combustion, Maya

COMMENTS: After some basic training in the applications mentioned above at THE GERMAN FILM SCHOOL, this VFX challenge came handy as a good exercise for us.
First, Paule made a matte painting of the destroyed city in Photoshop. We had to find a way to visualize a good transition between those two images that didn't look static at all. With all the fun that particles bring, we tried, tested, rendered and rendered again. combustion was used for all the compositing.
Because of performance problems in combustion with making a huge shockwave that fitted the perspective of the image, tobyx used Maya's particle engine for that.
When Paule applied several disastrous explosions and fiddled with the numerous layers, tobyx did the camera move.
There is a lot of stuff in the shot that could have been better, but overall we quite like it.

SOFTWARE USED: Digital Fusion, Corel Photopaint

COMMENTS: Well, my new fatherhood kind of got in the way of going all out on this one I'm afraid. But since blowing stuff up is still cool I threw this one together today.

I used Photopaint to remove the collapsing buildings from the original picture, googled a volcano that would be responsible for the destruction and then used Digital Fusion to put everything together.

Software uses: Photoshop, Combustion

Comments: Photoshop was used to extract the buildings - very boring work ;)
The separate buildings (layers) were imported into a 3D Composition in Combustion with individual Z-Depths. Some Scatter and Lightning Effects as well as three Artbeats Clips.
Some Camera animation and looong rendering

See attached file (divx avi) for result...
