I've worked in production for over 5 years now, but I am relatively new to post and brand new to compositing. I've heard the term "plate" thrown around here and there, and it seems like some people use it as a synonym for "image." I have the idea in my head that it refers to a background image before any compositing or effects are rendered, as in "clean plate." Could someone define the term for me exactly, and maybe suggest a good glossary of (digital) visual effects terminology?

Thanks!

I agree with you, plate is best used as a term for a clean background in which your compositing will be put together...but don't take it from me, you can find a definition the the book Visual Effects in A Digital World, it's the dictionary of Visual Effects terms I think you are looking for. Check it out here:

Visual Effects in A Digital World (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0122937856/qid=1090432082/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/104-8160285-0615114?v=glance&s=books)

Check it Out,
