View Full Version : Rights for using shots you worked on, in your showreel

Something I've just encountered for the first time so thought I'd bring it up for discussion here. I was recently asking permission on behalf of a junior, for her to use shots she worked on in her showreel (observing all the usual crediting the show, and not releasing anything until well after it has aired). Usually it is a formality, and the producers are happy for you to use footage for that purpose. This time it seems she might be rejected usage due to actors contracts. If she is allowed, she might only be able to use shots with bit-part actors not keys, ...which of course are in general the less flashy shots she has done. We'll see what happens, nothing to be done but wait to hear what the outcome is, but I was wondering what peoples views are here and if anyone else has encountered a tightening of rules regarding usage of shots you've worked on, on showreels for your own limited distribution (as a freelancer to potential employers).
Makes it interesting if you are trying to get hired if you're still new to the industry, if you can't put together your best shots for a reel.

normally the studio you work for holds the right and can allow you to use the shots. mostly thye need approval from the studios that shot the film as this is their property. i never heard of actors having any rights to any footage.

Yes, it is usually a pretty straight forward process, and since many people on the production, in various departments, will be asking for usage of shots for showreels (ranging from actors, to DOP, to vfx) the studios usually have a standard process for clearing things, which in my past experience has been a simple yes with need to credit the shot to them (and they won't release the clips until after release). All good, ...but this situation has been strange.

I worked for a big and well known tv company on a small side job as well never got any reply from them for 1 month already I asked as well if I could use the sequence I worked for my reel.
Nothing..... so I will have to wait 1 year or never to get anything from them?
