novice glow question

I am a novice and am wondering what technique are used to create glow effects.

I connect a blur node and then a brightness node.... but then am wondering what others would do to tie it back in with the original.

That's a very simple glow....

You could also play with luma-keying and MMulting before blurring to get it to JUST glow the highlights....
