I started little thread here
http://www.whatisbroken.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43
but i would like to hear more answers:

So, prototyping VFXs: explosions, magics, plasmas, lasters, etc.
How its done in industry: whatever movies or games? Does it drawn on papers, pre-vis later?
Who are really behind the inventing fx? a good artist or?

Thanks in advance,
Alexey

I'm not sure I really understand your question, but I'll try:

Usually the original vision comes from the director (or at least should). Then, general storyboards for the shots are worked out between the director, cinematographer, and visual effects supervisor. Depending on the need of each shot, some shots can get pre-visualisation, while others may only need rough sketches.

Once in post-production, there is a mix of things. A lot of people use reference footage or photos for real-world understanding. But then a shot is usually refined by both the artist (3D or 2D or both) and the visual effects supervisor. The director also has input, depending on what he or she wants.

Does that answer your question? Or am I completely misunderstanding what you're asking?

Yes, something like that.
Would be nice to see that decision making process on examples somewhere
on feature DVD or web.
