VFX 001 CHALLENGE ENTRY:
http://odin.prohosting.com/judeng91/planet_challenge_resize.mov
MEMBER: JUDENG
SOFTWARE USED: COMBUSTION 2.1 with standard plug-ins
NOTES:
The shot consists of two parts…the space cannon which shoots the beam, and the planet blowing up. The cannon was done in combustion paint, wth metallic textures overlaid on the surface. The beam was generated using the particle system of combustion(with color correction and glow added). The planet is a still frame texture map, with selections/color correction applied to create the spherical look. The destruction is a combination of particles, animated keyer, masks, and motion blur. A camera pan bridges the ship firing to the planet exploding.

MEMBER: elvisDeane
SOFTWARE USED: particleIllusion3, PhotoPaint 7
NOTES: The planet was a still shot of the surface of Venus which I colour corrected and touched up in photopaint. Everything else in the shot is particle emitters I made from scratch in particleIllusion.

SOFTWARE USED: Shake 2.5, Photoshop 7
NOTES: No plug-ins used. Not even glow. Image of planet was high resolution photo from Astronomy Picture of the Day (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov). Artificial planet movement created wholly using 2D tricks. Plasma blasts were painted in. Burn elements from personal library. I will post shake .shk file once challenge is over. For other pictures see this thread (http://www.vfxtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=644).

SOFTWARE USED: Shake
NOTES: Only input was a planet (http://www.students.tut.fi/~fistball/kinston.gif) that I googled. The rest is created from scratch inside Shake with the default tools. The citylights and the cracks are painted, the initial explosion is also based on painting. The ship and the rocket are combinations of shapes and paint, the nightsky is just some non-moving noise. Took me about 6 hours straight :D

ENTRY: Blowing up redearth (alittle under 1mb)
MEMBER: TrenZ62
SOFTWARE USED: Combustion 2.1 baby
NOTES: The planet is a pic of earth which I used color correction and movie effect to make it look red. The explosions are a combination of different particle effects. I was going to make a musical score to go with it but I didn't expect it to take 8 hours to render so I'll plan better next challenge.

Phew...just in under the wire I hope.
It could have been better. But since I had only 8 hours today and the last two weeks of my life have revolved around getting married and going on a honey moon, I think I have a good excuse.
ENTRY: HERE (http://www.vfxtalk.com/challenges/VFX001/vfx_0001_final.mpg)
MEMBER: Es-Diar
SOFTWARE USED: Digital Fusion
Since I had no time to find a decent planet I took the moon map that comes with MAX and made it - sort of - look like a revolving planet in Digital Fusion. Apart from that all elements (cracks, particles etc) where created in Fusion directly.
More details will follow as soon as I have some more time. In the meantime - enjoy - and may the Force etc...
