Hey all,

Well here's my first WIP. I want to make a part from the teaser, and instead of Ghost Rider bike I'll replace it with the one provided in this challenge.

I tried doing camera matching with Matchmover but since there isn't much details in this shot and it's full of motion blur then eventually I just keyframed the camera manually in Maya. The matching as you see is still not perfect. I need to keep the motion but change the perspective.

I hope to finish this shot this time, unlike my previous submission of the bridge. Although this month I have even less time due to my marrige, vacation, moving, etc.. . So we'll see what happens. It's only 44 frames this time so it could be easier. :-)

Anybody recognize the bike model of the challenge? I need to get more reference and I'm not that much of an expert in bikes...

It appears to be a Honda CBR600RR...

Very nice. Good luck on the marriage. Did you get married yet, or is it coming up?

Thanks, I just got married last week. Honeymoon is tomorrow. :-)

Here's another update...

Got back from the honeymoon yesterday. :-)
Had some time to work today.. Here're some more updates:

wip3_bike1-4.jpg - The modeling is done. Yes it's not so accurate and details are missing but I want to move on to fix it to the tracking I did, and then shade it and put it on fire.

wip3_bg.jpg - The upper one is the background from the teaser I used as reference. The middle one is a panoramic photo I took from the vancouver lookout with my Nikon D70s. The bottom one is after modifing it in photoshop to be a night mode. I don't care much about the lower building since they aren't going to be shown.

I made a simple rig to the bike and took it back to the tracking animation I firstly did and as I suspected I needed to redo the the tracking (which was hand animated) cause the perspective wasn't right when I first did it.

I changed the camera to 28mm and looks like it's matching much better now.

Now I need to make a quick rider, I'll probably make textures out of the supllied source image and make some fire! :firedevil

And another update.. First fire test. I mapped an old footage on a cloth sim.

Today I spent some hours to create the jacket. Was a time consuming task to UV that thing and to create the texture out of the source image which doesn't show a lot of parts from the jacket.

I attached the finished texture and the model. I'm going to animate and pose it with clusters. No point of making a rig on such a short shot and the animation is very subtle too.

Ok this update is just a teaser to my final work from the teaser. :cyclops:

I finished the Rider, the fire sim and yesterday the render with all the 42 passes was done. Today I'm finally starting the comp work. I'm going to keep it at a high resolution of 920X516 (high definition ratio).

*edit*
Oh and.. eventually I added some animation to the rider, just like the teaser, so the clusters of course couldn't help me and I had to rig the rider as well. I just made a simple FK rig but the pain was that I had to skin it while it was in it's pose. If I hadn't changed my mind, I would've model it at t-pose and rig it from there.

Very nice recreation. A little low on the actual creative side, but very well done on the craftmanship scale.

Thanks. I should've mentioned this isn't the final ver. The final one has more creativity. :) Although I did intend just to re-create to see how much I can take the provided subject and make it almost identical to the ghost rider.

Ok, I must say the lack of interest and having only 2 votes so far didn't really encourage me to prepare this. I did put a lot of work in this challenge and thought making the entire scene in 3D unlike most of the other works will make an impression. Re-creating an existing shot is also quite a challenge by itself. But I guess I was wrong...

Anyhow, enough with my pathetic sobbing, some ppl still might find this useful so here goes:

Hi Dreamie,

even though you havent had many votes, its still cool! and hey voting goes on till sept 15th so you never know dude. I think you showing how you did your shot is very cool! and you shouldnt feel discouraged at all! think about all the visual effects people in the world looking at your work right now! so its still all good.. and hey at least you had the balls to enter! :)

cheers

Thanks Haz. Good luck at the final vote results.. :)

I'm just curious, did anyone had problems hearing the sound of my submission? It's just that a friend of mine couldn't get sound in his computer and was able to hear only the sound in the big quicktime version.. So I'm not so sure how compactible is the sound codec in my wmv version with other machines..

My final submission was here:

Thank you MrRob. :-)

I actually enjoyed working on it so much I've decided to make the time in future and re-model the bike to the ghost rider bike and try to make another shot. This time it'll be a shot of my own..

*edit*
Looks like my making of was disappeared, guess it's because of the server shutdown. Re-uploading it fails so till things gets sorted out in this site I put it here: http://www.dreamer.co.il/temp/fireComp_howto.jpg

Dreamie, I don't understand what you have done with the 'secondary flames' I see a lot of the same loader, and the same tools, but I can't tell what the difference is between all those loaders. Do they all have different timings or something? It looks pretty complex for the final result. Could you explain a little what you did there?

Hi,
The reason you see many loaders is because I had a small res footage so I duplicated it, retimed each one and masked it on top of the other so I'll have small tendrils through the entire output resolution.

I could simply track a single footage over the wheels movement but since the footage was small I didn't want it to look so obvious.. So instead I just mapped those tendrils (secondary flames) to the blue channel of the wheel combined with the flames alpha channel..

Yes the shot is too short to notice it.. But I have all the setup ready, I plan to make a longer shot sometime when I arrange some free time.. I enjoyed that challenge a lot. :-)

Sorry for my late response btw, didn't notice your question till now.. I was too busy leaving canada and getting my life back together in my home country..
