i have spent about 3 minutes of my life using a mac, but i do like them :) besides looking absolutley awesome, i think they are innovative, fast and specialised.
Its a love hate thing, but i definitley see a place for macs in the grand scheme of things.
Still, give me a PC anyday ;)

I don't hate any machine. That's just too harse. The only reason I use a PC is because I like to tinker with the innards, and there are more knickknacks and addons and games you can buy for a PC.
BUT, if all that changes, and the software and hardware I want is on a Mac, I'd get one. The new G5 seems pretty fast, but the look, eh, maybe it'll grow on me.
The powerbook is nice.. I don't see why any other PC maker can't make a widescreen laptop?

I love macs and pc's
I use a mac at work and a pc at home.
my pc crashes alot, my mac doesn't
my pc is faster and is more configurable, my mac isnt.
I know what the extensions are on my mac
I wouldnt have a clue what half the files on my pc are for.
I usually run 6-7 programs at once on my mac without a hassle
I run 2 programs on my pc before it falls over.
I dont play games on them.
I have a PS2 instead.
I dont care what the box looks like cause im usually looking at the monitor.
I should be getting one of these new G5's in a couple of weeks
ill let you know how it goes.
my 2cents.

i'm a huuuuuge fan of the intel/amd (especially amd) processor, and the customizability of a windows/linux based PC.. apple is apple. end of story -- you cant open one up and pop in a new cpu, or (for the most part) add new hardware to it without voiding some kind of warranty. THAT pisses me off, since macs (and major pc vendors like dell, gateway, compaq, and even high end ones like boxx and alienware) are EGREGIOUSLY overpriced for what goes in them.
for the sake of my argument i'll refer to all windows/linux as "pc" (even tho it's just a personal computer and can be refferred to as a mac)...
i use a pc at work, macs AND PCs at school, and i own 2 PCs at home. i absolutely hate both the macs AND PCs at school since no one treats them right and they're slow as dogshit despite the blazing hardware in them. the PC at work is kinda screwy... but all in all, judging from friend's macs who also run clean systems like myself -- i find PCs to be faster (sometimes not alot, sometimes tons) than macs. as we're all in the same industry i find it relevant to point this out to you guys & girls since PCs are:
A. roughly the same, if not faster (i havent found a slower PC) than a mac for the same price. X$ spent on a pc and the same on a mac has yielded me better results with PCs.
B. there's tons more software for PCs -- not neccesarilly in our world, save plugins. but if you want games, you'll be waiting quite awhile for them on mac -- if at all. oh and since i'm a huge house music fan, soulseek www.slsk.org the absolute best music search for that kind of music is pc-only.
i came across this link today and find it 100% relevant to this discussion:

you may or may not have already seen that, regardless, allow me to elaborate on the most pivitol points -- apple tweaked their benchmarks to make the G5 look better, but that should be nothing new, since everyone else does that too... what IS interesting is that since apple's tweak makes it appear to be say a 40 (arbitrary number) this guy quotes dell's benchmark of the same system etc and since everyone tweaks their products to look better, it comes out at an 80... double the performance (again arbitrary)... but let's just think for a second.. if BOTH machines are tweaked out to look the best -- even if it's in this one situation, they're BOTH tweaked. which means they're BOTH levelled out and on equal playing field.
think bout it.. 2 cars are street racing down a quarter mile stretch. one has 400 horsepower, the other a mere 298. all else aside, the 400's gonna win because of brute power. however to beat it, the 298 blasts a shot of Nos and gets another X amount of horsepower. but that wont help much if the 400 ALSO blasts Nos... since that advantage just got nullified.
thus the benchmarks, relatively speaking, still place the G5 slower than their P4, Xeon, and AMD counterparts.
and i dunno what everyone's swooning about 64bit in the new macs... AMD's opteron cpu is also 64bit and it's been out since around april -- and there's a 64bit version of linux so you can maya/shake render with those system benefits as well. currently it's implimented as a server, and a workstation (altho they're still working on that) and i believe it'll trickle down to desktop by the fall... but we all use workstation-class machines here, so that shouldnt be a problem. i think the G5's just gettin more publicity since it's coming straight out as desktop as well. even tho AMD was there first (or if you wanna be a stickler, intel's itanium has been out even longer -- also 64bit)
personally, i'll have my concrete decisions when we get G5s at school... then i'll whip up some really intensive comp in AFX and some mega document in photoshop and see which renders faster.
but for now, i'll still wager a PC for the same price will beat a mac in ALL areas (even aesthetics if you customize it right)
my pc never crashes unless i do something REALLY stupid. but these are all my humble opinions, you might have grossly different stances.
if you're still reading this, then i thank you for your time and hope this was at all helpful -- albeit my views/opinions

apples upgrades are expensive.....they just came out with the jaguar for $120 or sumthin and now they got the panther for another $120.....
and in my experiences the mac crashes way more often, and cant handle many prgrams running at once like the pc.....more of everything on a pc....and if not atleast the customizable aspect is large.
