Search www.aefreemart.com for beginner tutorials, www.creativecow.net and www.ayatoweb.com for intermediate lessons later.

I would suggest learning Photoshop first, just so you have a basic understanding of layers. Then I would download the 30-day trial version of AE and give it a whirl.
