ambient occlusion in Nuke - March 10th, 2009, 08:05 AM

hello

sorry this might be a little strange but I don't know how to get the best result in Nuke with ambient occlusion pass..
you know in Photoshop I just multiply it .. but in Nuke, Multiplying darkens the whole image.. and I don't know how to composite the AO pass back on the footage properly..

I 'm not pro with Nuke so I need help!

thank you in advance..

In general, an ambient occlusion pass is multiplied in. Yes, multiply darkens the image. That's the point. You multiply the ambient occlusion by ambient illumination, then add ambient to diffuse. You can grade the ambient occlusion pass to lift the blacks or whatever to make it have a lighter effect.

definitely multiply it -

it could be darkening it because it is also multiplying the alpha channel as well? check it is only operating on the RGB channels? just a thought...

also, if it the AO isn't on white, it will darken too much of the image, so if that's the case, try merging it over a white constant and then multiply it.

When you use the multiply operation, try checking on alpha masking...its to the right. That will multiply just the object with the alpha as mask...me thinks.
