10935 Get ready for the Golden Compass! In a parallel universe, young Lyra Belacqua journeys to the far North to save her best friend and other kidnapped children from terrible experiments by a mysterious organization.

This big screen adaptation of the Carnegie Medal-winning novel by Pullman comes from the first volume in the His Dark Materials trilogy. It plays out in a parallel Oxford, where young Lyra Belacqua begins a dimension-crossing odyssey that builds from a merely child's adventure into a complex, dark, philosophical epic.

Looks promising.
Hopefully the storyline is not as weak as in narnia.

I agree.. I hope that this series of movies lives up to the books of the same name.

I can't wait, the books were so good.

Narnia always had that kidsy quality to it. I always found it hard to believe that Tolkien And Lewis were so close and yet there stories were so much different in depth. Pullman has definitely gone more towards Tolkien in the richness of the story. Hopefully that comes through in the film.

Yeah, Golden Compass looks really sweet and with a great cast. I hope it works for all ages, Narnia was too 'kids' oriented in some ways.

I've never looked forward to a movie release this much. The books are absolutely phenomenal, and I really think they're doing their best not to give them too much of the Hollywood-bastardization treatment. Pullman's writing is so much more succinct and imaginative than Tolkien's (who I absolutely cannot stand; the man can't write), and the storyline is much more interesting and unique. And flangust is right about the series being a lot deeper than something like Narnia, which does have more of a child-oriented feel to it.

The anticipation is killing me...:google:

I agree that Tolkien writes like gifted 8 year old, but so does Pullman.

Only thing that held the books together was the world and themes and the fact that characters didn't stop to sing in every chapter. It's like Pullman wrote the books without script and then noticed that he needs some plot-device to make more pages and he pulls it out from his arse in the middle of nowhere ("Now we must go to this place before we go where we were supposed to go and oh boy are we going the long way!"). No sense for setup and payoff, instead shallow side characters stumbling through the pages. Pullman's writing is better than Dan Brown's, thank sweet raptor jesus, but then Dan Brown writes like a very dead monkey cadaver guided by testicular electric shocks (should say so in the cover of his books).

I liked the ending, though. And as said, I liked the world and themes. If they play the themes right it has the chance of being quite strong flick.

Good points. If only Pullman wrote like Robertson Davies...

It`s a great book, I really hope this film could be better than Narnia (please!!!), I believe that Pullman go behind with their characters, in the border line, when you dont`t really know if they are good or bad. Just walking on the edge.., everyone has a different target, and it makes it more intresting. And the end of triology is great!!!!
