I myself am trying to find a school that would be good to go to and was wondering if anyone could tell me about a few schools. I have been researching for the last few days and the ones that stick out to me the most are:

Oregon3d - oregon3d.com
University of Advancing Technology - uat.edu
Videosymphony - videosymphony.com - the motion graphics & effects career program
gnomon3d - gnomon3d.com - the certificate program

Could anyone let me know what they think about these schools - if they have heard anything good or bad about them?

Thanks a bunch!... I hope this isn't hijacking the thread, it seems to be relavent and I didn't want to clutter the forums with threads on schools.

Thanks for the plug Icedeyes, good to see we're making an impression.

I just wrapped up a new student montage that includes projects from my current students.

Check it out when you get a chance:

Good luck with your searches niceguysan and AcrylicAce.

BTW: We have a pretty extensive library of Gnomon (and other) training vids that my students are encouraged to browse through before they decide which ones they'd like to purchase for their own personal collection. (Not all of them are worth the price...)

Cool niceguysan, glad you liked it.

When you apply make sure to include your VFXTalk handle so I know which application is yours. (Or email me and let me know your name.)

Cheers,

M

Gnomon - May 25th, 2007, 10:03 AM

Gnomon School of Visual Effects is in the middle of Hollywood and has major connections with major and minor studios and vfx houses in the industry. Their full time program currently boasts 100% placement...at mid-level positions in the industry!! The networking opportunities there are pretty extraordinary, due to the fact that ALL of their instructors are relevant industry professionals. They have instructor galleries and credits on their website...which is pretty rare for a school.

Hey,
I'm a sheridan graduate and I teach at Seneca so I know both schools very well.
forget about Sheridan, It's a joke.
If you wanna become a compositor Seneca is good because it's very 2D oriented, but if you wanna do 3d, Seneca is no good.
I'd say VFS is the best in Canada right now.

That seems rather absurd to suggest that gnomon has a 100% job placement rate. It says on their web page that it is 90% (or around there) which is incredibly high but to say that EVERY person that attends gnomon gets a job in the field is rediculous.

You're right AcrylicAce, Gnomon's official statement on their website claims 83% placement.

It is pretty risky to make any decision on which school is "best" based on a few anonymous forum posts.

Unfortunately there is no easy way of making this decision. You just have to do your homework and spend as much time as you can comparing what each institution offers and more importantly trying to get some credible feedback from potential employers.

Be skeptical, ask questions and be clear on what you want to get out of your education.

Cheers,

M

Also something which IMO opinion as a film student is reallllly important, is to not only go somewhere which has good tutition, but also a good reputation for talented, inspired, passionate students - not just a bunch of kids who are at college cus they thought it sounded cool and didnt have anything else to do. Cus the ppl u mix with have a great bearing on your own development in these fields. And this is especially the case because film/fx etc is such a collaborate art.

Hi nicegysan,

I am also from India & did my 3d course in MAAC but to tell you the truth its the worst of all schools, in fact its not even a good joke. So far I have had to learn on my own & currently own a small studio. As far as I think VFS is a good choice 'as' I have heard, but as Mark Bénard pointed out be skeptical...also I would advice you what someone on this post said...try getting a job at a small studio as a trainee and see where that takes you..also lostboyslearning seems like a really cool place to learn as the boys are lost. Sorry 'bout the poor joke. but u get the point.

VFS or Seneca - May 27th, 2007, 05:05 PM

Sheridan may not be the best options, unless you're looking for a place to rent computers and classrooms according to some ex-students. Very little actual teaching happens anymore. Seneca students produce some good work and VFS is one step ahead of the league for VFX from what I've seen. That's my ten cents on this. Better still, gnomon is your best option in terms of value for money. Good luck.

Hi Jaisingh , i agree with u bout maac coz i see that they arent the best in givig the quality edu, infact in my experience i hav seen i never had a good institute except for Panjab Univ where i did my post grad at least i my dept [DCSA] is good in giving quality edu except for a few teachers but it depends on the propsed sylabus by the board , regarding my MAAC @ GGN , the teacher they hav has got some good skills.. i havent started doing 3D stuff though i hav seen him working has got many 3d stuff in Autodesk MAYA, what i am looking for is Industry standard learning & rest depends on my own creative abiliy as well...

LBL is cool iliked it muchy , i would love to join LBL but i read on their site that this year session time has passed out & now i would hav to wait untill sept 08 .. so i am left with the choces like Seneca or VFS..
