Cloverfield - January 18th, 2008, 06:46 AM

Has anyone seen it yet? I watched it last night and I thought it was awesome. Totally shattered the little expectation I had. I would recommend everyone seeing it. Has some great effects and comping in it. Anyone know the f/x houses that worked on it? Oh yeah, if you suffer from motion sickness, take some meds before you see it. It's the hand held Blair Witch style on steroids. Lots of running and shaky camera. What did everyone else think?

I know that Double Negative (in London) worked on some of it.

Other than that, I don't know... Looking on IMDb, though (here), it looks like it was pretty much a mix between DNeg and Tippett.

I tried looking for it, forgot they post that stuff on IMDB. Thanks Hugh. Anyone how know they tracked all that stuff? Has to be one of the hardest movies to track besides Transformers. Especially since it was shot at night.

Tippett Studio was responsible for all of the creature (the monster / parasites) vfx in the film!

We just saw it ourselves last night, and we are very proud and happy how it all turned out.

Tippett's matchmove department gets a huge 'high-five x 10' those guys pulled off some amazing tracks for this show.

Double Negative did all of the city/building destruction shots, oil tanker explosion, the brooklyn bridge sequence, lady liberty's head, etc. (that all looked amazing as well, but then again, It's Dneg, they always do exceptional work!) There were a couple shots where we rendered out the monster and sent it off to Dneg for the final composite, but they were shots where you only saw a tiny glimpse of the creature and was mostly city/building destruction. Otherwise if you saw the monster or the parasites, that was all Tippett Studio,

Yeah and working on this one, dailies were definitely a dose of motion sickness...

Wow, I am happy to see someone that actually worked on it in this forum. The matchmoving was incredible, I didn't think you could do that to scenes with that much movement everywhere. What is your comping app that you primarily used? Only two studios worked on it? Incredible work, great job. Can you describe some things you encountered while comping it by chance?

Thanks gottony, we had a blast making it, by far it's the most fun I've had on a show in a long time.

I can't say to much about it at the moment, but Tippett Studio uses Shake as it's primary compositing package, and we used it on Cloverfield.

Once I find out I can talk a bit about it, I'll try and get back over here and share some things we did on the compositing side of things... lots of 2d dust and debris elements though, lots.

Ah, great! It's so cool to see someone who worked on this one. I have a million questions, but I'll wait until you've got the greenlight and see what you say before I hit you with the list.

Don't forget about us!

PS - For anyone wondering about the plot, research the viral marketing campaign and it will fit in a lot of the backstory for you.

Nice one Cog. Definitely backslaps for all the match movers. We stayed around to see who they were to give them a polite golf clap

Indeed, I was greatly impressed by the tracking. I was expecting shaky but I wasn't expecting that much movement with the monster in the scene. That's why I stumbled along this post because I am looking to track a difficult shot and was looking for any 3d trackers that may have been used in this film.

Film was fantastic, found the chopper view of the monster when it met up with the B2 bomber to be my favorite but there are so many that's its hard to have to pick just one.

Found this article on Gizmodo this morning on the cameras used in Cloverfield.
