Projected Matte Painting -
July 22nd, 2009, 08:58 AM
This is a matte painting that I did a few months ago. Painting done in photoshop, projection done in after effects. Give me any thoughts. Thanks!

Technically its well done. Personally though I think it looks a little to lifeless to me. Some live action stuff like dust or subtle plant moving. Something to take the eyes of the static painting. Its hard to be specific because its on a shot by shot basis. But as for the actual projection you definately nailed it.

Thanks a lot for your response! Yeah I agree, it is a bit lifeless. I want to make the sign bouncing on the pole in the wind, maybe like you said a plant swaying, and a cloth simulation draped across pole blowing in the wind. If you were to see the actual HD render, there actually is dust particles in the light beams of both lights, maybe I should make them bigger so they can be seen compressed like this. I do think it turned out pretty well for my first matte painting. I will definitely try to add some life to it though. Thanks again.

Please Post a reply if you watch this and have opinions. I am graduating in 6 months and need opinions on some of my work. It would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

projection mapping is well done.
your sky is very strange. and the image is lifeless.
you can add some details, such as smoke/fog, moving grass, clouds.. and maybe a tumbleweed...
and a little bit of camera-shake...
good luck =)
what has been seen cannot be un-seen

It's a good example of how one can fake 3D by doing a 2.5 Matte as it's called. I would remove the car or swap it for something else. It's not detailed enough to be believable as 3D and gives everything away - AND it is important when doing mattes for zoom that you work with a larger resolution than usuall. Usually mattes are done surprisingly small (between 2000 and 3000 pixels) - even though one double the size while working on it. I work with 10 000 x 7500 pixels (and 300 p/i) as I love doing details only I know about! And you can use them as posters when needed.
Well done, Mojo!

You've got some sizzling issues at the bottom of the frame in the beginning, and you also have a LOT of spec on the ground plane. So much so that it looks like a wet sidewalk instead of dusty dirt. I would practically eliminate all of the spec on the ground. I can tell because I can see a muddled reflection of the car in the dirt.
Those two things, plus the comments above and another pass at it and it should look great.
