Study on davy jones -
June 26th, 2007, 02:54 PM
i was inspired by pirates of the caribbean, and decided to make my own version of the character davy jones. i will animate it over a live actor and composite on video, just as the ilm folks did. this is the first time i will do a rig this complicated. here is some modeling progress

thank you for your replys, the software i'm using is 3dsmax, and the renderer is brazil with 3 layers of sub surface scattering, the head will be rigged with muscles, and a personal rigging system i created for the tentacles, that will use physic simulation and manual keyframes for extra control. its kinda hard to mix simulation and manual animation, but i will use the point cache to bake the simulation on to the mesh, and then it will allow me to add any morph or hand animation.

looks great! did you use only davy jones references or bill nighy's pictures as well?
I would love to see that rig in action. it's always a pleasure to see good TD stuff.
keep it up!

Thanks! , as i stated earlier, this is my point of view of davy jones, it is not my purpose to make an exact copy of the original character. anyway he is looking like bill nighy but it wasnt my primary goal . here is a quick test with 3 tentacles colliding each other and showing procedural animation at the same time.

This is awesome man!! It looks really cool. Cant wait to see this in action.
So what kind of footage have you planned to shoot? Are you gonna go simple and only shoot one actor that youre gonn composit the cg head over. Or a more complex scene?!

my only crit is about tentacls being too equal as witdth, but animating them could make a big difference so it's just a thought.
keep us updated!

yes, at the moment they are almost equal, not identically, but as you said, the animation will change them dramatically as happens in real life that tentacles get thicker of thinner depending on the move they made.

Thanks anthony113 , right now im rendering a little secuence for test the simulation and the manual animation system, the simulation is taking a LOT of time with only 10 tentacles, i want to add at least 40 or 45. the renderer is also very time consuming because of the subsurface scattering effects, almost 40 hours to render only 7 seconds at 640x480, tomorrow i'll post it.

have you tried rendering in passes? it's possible that it may decrease your render time or at the very least allow you to make small fixes without re-rendering.
