Software: Photoshop, Maya.
Tools: Wacom tablet Intuos 3 size 12x9.

Final canvas size in Photoshop is 4170x 1768, I always trying to be around 4K to have nice details when dolly zoom needed, and keep panoramic layout to have a nice camera Pan.
Image size in Maya same as final in PS 4170x 1768, to render models I use “mib_illum_lambert” shader, it’s Mental Ray node and it gives look of occlusion where I can control lights. I do render shadow and lights as a separate passes using Mental Ray, to have separate layers under control as Adjustment Layer in Photoshop, however I do often repaint by hand shadow and light passes in Photoshop.

To create this project I needed to use variety of techniques, I did tons of digital painting in Photoshop, I use Maya to build 3D environment, and models of the buildings, for textures and references I use my own photo library, that created with using Nikon D80 during traveling around the world. I used wide lens setting for camera in Maya to achieve wide angle, to have more points of interest in my composition, however sun is a major central point in this composition. I did a lot of research in art history and architecture to achieve true look of scene during that period, some buildings are referenced to actual structures, such as arch on the right side I modeled model of actual Triumphal Arch of Orange that is located in southern France. Also a painting and compositing sculptures for wall and portico textures, with Roman lamp design was exiting concept art experience, as well as a lighting condition and color of lights study. In this project I use my knowledge in Roman History, classical architecture, art and history research to create.

Inspiration for this painting comes from the story of love between Mark Antony and Cleopatra, which is ended by them both committing suicide, after the Battle of Actium (2 September 31 BC), when Octavian invaded Egypt. This digital painting is a product of my imagination, of how Roman Harbor would look like during that period, last century B.C., architecture of that time, Roman Galleys, people and harbor layout during sunset on Mediterranean Sea.
