    i am fairly new to VFX and im wondering how to achieve a true black and white film (no midtones)

    i am trying to make a knock off of sin city but i cant seem to get the black and white i really want

    I am guessing you are referring to the "toon-style" from the film and not where the actors shown with mid tones ?!!
    From what I know it's done with roto shapes (or something similar) but try searching Creative Cow and other sites with After Effects related tutorial and how to's they might have some insight to it...

    Sin City did have midtones in their characters - sure, they were a lot more contrasty, but they weren't as straight black and white as you seem to be describing.

    To get this effect, though, you just want to get something like a really hard lumakey and then use this to split up your black and white sections of the image.
