    The Challenge

VFXTalk challenge you to take us on an stimulating journey through the cityscape below. We want to experience exciting and destructive mayhem through this interesting metropolis. Using this image, we would like you to add your own embellishments; be it smoke pouring from windows, streets and alleyways alight with flames, people running and on fire, or the collapse of complete buildings. The goal is to create an image of a wartorn and destroyed environment, cause by our alien brethren from another world.

Everything must be created from scratch, save textures or photographs, of course. The complete shot should be 240 frames long at 24fps (ten seconds long) at low HD, res 852x480.
No prior work will be accepted. If we find that you are using existing libraries of cities or building models, you will be disqualified.

    Hi,

I most likely will not have any more thime this week to use the extended time limit, so I am posting my entry now.

Here is a link to my WIP thread: Go Here

The Fusion comp screen grab is for the exploding building section of comp.

    Good luck to everyone!
    -David

PS. I was working in frames during the project, but my head was in thinking 30fps not 24fps, so my entry is a little long at 24fps. I hope this not a big issue.

OK, here's my final piece. I hope you all enjoy it. I'm looking forward to seeing all the other entries. This was a very cool challenge to undertake, and from the variety of imaginative ideas I've seen in the WIP forum, the submissions promise to be highly educational and flat-out fun to watch.

    Here's a link to my WIP forum:http://www.vfxtalk.com/forum/vfx-310...er-t13006.html

It looks like I'm the only one that didn't use a 3d app. This is all Photoshop and After Effects.

Well, almost had a heart-attack, but averted the problem. After 6 hours of rendering I forgot to turn off a fade node.

I spent my final hours with the comp, did not get time to add audio or slates of any kind.
Wanted to finish the shot, audio and slates are for other people in the real world.

    Here is my WIP.

I had fun, this was a great challenge to get my chops up again.
    Thank you,

    Good luck everyone!

Well, this is my entry, and it´s the result of three hard days of work. I worked with Adobe After effects, Particular Illusions, 3ds max for the models, and some explosions are taken from the free selection of Detonation Films.
I would like to thank my partner PorotoParker, who worked with me in the 3d design of the ships and creatures.
I hope you all like it and I´m looking forward for the next challenge so I can work with a little more time.

    Hey all
Well, for better or worse, lack of time, and only 13 or so total days half-drunken, weekend-only effort, here ya go

Helpful advice: Try not to have MORE lead artist duties at your day job thrust upon you close to the start of a VFXtalk challenge, and allow yourself to think you can handle it

    Tools:
Maya - Fusion - After Effects - Photoshop

ALL the details and TONS more screenshots from the last 2 months can be found here:

    Heres my entry for VFX310!!

First of all. Sorry for the Fusion watermark.
Im kind of happy with the final piece. Altough i was supposed to have shot my girlfriend on greenscreen and comp´ed her on to the roof of the "help alive inside" building. And having her waving her arms for help. But my capture program totally fucked up so. No live footage

Big big thanks to everyone that have posted comments in my WIP thread.

This was an awesome challenge to work on. Im really looking forward to the next one

    Software used:
    • Blender 3D (Basic 3d models for matte painting, and some grass)
    • VUE Esprit (3D Threes & bushes)
    • Photoshop (Matte Painting)
    • Fusion (Composit)

    Footage resources:
    • Detonation Films
    • SXC.HU
    • And various other images found on the internet

By the way. For those who are intrested im gonna post the full res matte-painting in my WIP thread.

Well, this is the best I can do. Still missing finessing. I wanted to have some smoke on the edge of the crashing saucer, but there was no time. Lots of other stuff like small debris etc etc isn't there either. But still - I said I'd enter, so I'm entering :-)
Best of luck to all the better entries!!!
BTW software used: Fusion and MAX2008 and sxc.hu for the ocean view.
