I would agree with the general consensus here. A compositor doesnt need to know 3d... a GOOD compositor should. understanding it is a definite bonus on its own but to be able to actually complete a 3D project, even if its not to the level of a full on 3D artist, i found has increased my compositing skill exponentially. I used to be a decent compositor just getting by, then i learned 3D and modeled/textured/rigged/animated/lit/rendered tank, a cell phone, and many other projects, and it has helped me tons.

If you want to be great, i recommend it.

    Agreed.

Even if you can't drive the major 3d apps, you need to know the concepts, environment, and enough about how it works how to put passes/cameras/geo/environments together

well, as much as I disdain necroposting,
I feel I have to say, that I learned a 3D package before I picked up compositing. Even though I've forgotten most of what I learned, It has saved me on numerous occasions.
When you suggest a good solution to a problem the 3D dept has been having, and then it saves you staying back all night waiting for them to render something.... Then you can't really say that it doesnt make you a better compositor. (And a more well rested one.)
Honestly - I'd like to get back into some proper 3D someday soon. (Previs is all I ever do in a proper 3D package these days)

I myself know very little from everything since i am
a hobbyist but i think 2d compositors know much more
than the 3d guys who for all i know can be only modelers
or only riggers. Maybe the 3d field attracts less candidates
so the good ones survive without having to do any
    compositing.

    hi

this is to clarify that if a person knows 3d when in need or for minor changes they need not to be dependent on the 3d guys... when they are on rush or at tight deadlines(saves time )..

this is for general know how else when he is dependent on 3d guys then it can lead t some time loss ....

that depends on the productions houses or individual in a group...

    thanks

I think 3d and AE don't mix well.

I think it's good to know 3D if you are a compositor, though you don't have to have as much skill as a 3D artist. You should know about render passes, creating some basic figures, testing, things like that.

    hi

A person from 3d learned and feels comfort in the 2d based composting and he works swiftly when compared fr person from just 2d itself...... but finally its how one receives the final visualization for compositing is very important for click in the market....

    thank you
