  1. #1 Motion blur workflow with Maya and Nuke?
    Hi everyone,

I'm a nuke-noobie (primarily a shake user) and I was wondering if anyone has a good workflow for putting motion blur on 3D renders from Maya using vector passes or something in Nuke? - Looks like there is a way but I can't find any solid documentation on it.

    Cheers!

Ok, so I have been using these for some time now with great results:

    http://www.revisionfx.com/support/fa..._vectors/#Maya

    http://www.alamaison.fr/3d/lm_2DMV/lm_2DMV_ref.htm

That doc explains how to make Vectors for ReelSmart Motion Blur in AFX, but you can use these gizmo to still use these Vectors in Nuke:

    http://www.fxshare.com/nuke/download...olor/4428.html

After you have made the install of both the Lm_2DMV shader and the Nuke Gizmo, just pipe the Vectors to the Gizmo like the image, reminder that the result of the gizmo will go to the MOTION channel, (as you can see in the image):

    Hope it helps

Buy ReelSmart MB it's amazing. We just added it for the last project and it's a miracle worker. It even does an amazing job without any vector input at all in some cases it's outperforming the vector blur with vectors. With vectors and mattes it supports FG and BG seperation and all kinds of wonderful things. I highly recommend.

The OFX implementation in Nuke seems to be very good it's only crashed a couple of times.

Or you could always use Nuke's built in VectorBlur node.

Theres a couple of threads about this on this forum. Search this subforum for vectorblur or something. I had to much problems with the realsmart vectors from Maya. I instead use the p_motion2rgb mentalray shader and then the vectorblur. Search the forum for detailed instructions.

thanks for the suggestions everyone - I have another question - can Nuke read the motion blur vector information that is output by a Maya IFF file when you tick the "Keep Motion Vectors" under render globals when rendering with Maya Software? I use these vectors to do the "DoBlur" mel command in Maya to add motion blur, but was wondering if this could be achieved in Nuke in post?

I never used Maya IFFs in Nuke, but I believe that it might be possible. You just need to understand how the MV format is on those files and do a bit of conversion using a color expression (if needed) to convert it to the format suitable for Nuke.
