    Hi all,

I have a shot of a boat on the horizon which is locked off but still has quite some camera jitter, especially noticeable when comped onto the matte painting. The plate is un-trackable as there are no reference points, just a foggy dull horizon. Does anyone know of a "trick" in Nuke which may help smooth off this jitter?

    Thanks in advance!

can post a still image. basically, the cam is locked but there is vertical and horizontal jitter, no zoom or rotation.

In Shake, this is something that would be fixed with the SmoothCam Node - Though according to Hugh's guide, Nuke currently has no equivalent.

You might be able to increase the contrast on the mountain to bring it out, and then use a tracking point with an area large enough to use the mountains shape as a reference. Though these aren't things I can imagine working very well.

    Good Luck,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,

I have tried the SmoothCam node in Shake, but the resulted footage is moved way off on the X axis - using both normal and high quality. I tried adjusting the translationSmooth paramaters, but sill had no joy.

Doesn't help that the plate is pretty grainy either!

    hey there!

my suggestion would be to push the contrast really bad until the mountain shape in the background becomes good enough for a trcker. you might have to denoise the footage for that too.

if the shot is not too long i would track it by hand. not a really creative solution but it usually works well and especially when your shot isn't too long it saves you time, compared to the hours you might spend finding the perfect solution.

if you hand-track a grid with 50% transparancy it might help you keeping the track smooth

at least that's what i would do. if you find a better solution let us all know! good luck

I'd also try to create a high contrast version to track. By crushing the blue channel, then de-graining, crushing levels again, etc, I came up with this.

Might be able to track that horizontal line at the base of the mountain?

Thanks guys for the tips! Much appreciated. I ended up crushing the blue channel as theta suggested and managed to get a decent track from that. I also brought it into a Flame and managed to get a decent track there too. Now I am gonna compare the two and choose the best one. But it seems the problem has been solved!

    Once again, much appreciated!

Crushed like that I think you'd get a good track out of mocha as well.

fxphd has a cool free video tip with a similar shot. Involves adding two vertical lines to the entire sequence, therefore you have something to be able to do a 2 point track with.

Another thing that looks like it might work quite well with this shot is:

Blur the image by 50 pixels
Blur the image by 200 pixels
ISubA (to use Shake terminology) one from the other.
Brighten this up a huge amount. You should see a line at any kind of border. Possibly trackable....

I use sometime mokey's stable feature in that case that is so hard to stabilize.
I think this way is really easy and accuracy.
