Difference between 2D Compositor and VFX Compositor??

Hi
Recently when i was applying for a job in some companies for a position of a compositor many people asked me if i want position for 2D Compositor or VFX Compositorcan anybody here explain me the difference (I m a Fresher!!!)

And can u tell me which one is better(if possible)

Not a clue....

Possibly a "2D Compositor" is someone who just deals with 2D-only shots, while a "VFX Compositor" is someone who deals with integrating 3D into shots.

But really, I'm not convinced that whoever asked you that knows what they were talking about.....

Compositors are part of the 2D section of the VFX stage of a film. Compositing *is* an integral part of VFX, and it is (generally) very much 2D.

I'm with Hugh on this one, though I'd like to address the second part of your post. Could people advise you on which one is better?

...Better what? Better paid or better for you as an individual artist who's the sole person who can decide what career path is closest to their ambitions.

I just asked one of our VFX Producers this question, and she, similarly, didn't have a clue.

She did suggest that maybe "VFX Compositor" was the kind of person who worked more with editorial - doing very rough temps for the editor to cut in, which the VFX houses would then use as their lineup reference...

But for integrating 3D into a shot a compositor has to be experienced they wont be asking a fresher about it

and Matt i was asking if its better for me as an artist!!

That's where the difference between a Senior and Junior compositor comes in.

Could it be possible that 2d compositor deals with more "graphic" or motion graphics type of compositing whereas VFX Compositor has to deal with more photoreal comps dealing with fine keying, precise color correction and all things filmic?

lol ! you probably might be right @ compositing graphics designs :/ .. but then again generally both mean the same thing...

I personally find that they are different. I met some compositors who are good in designs and motion graphics to not have the skills for fine keying color correction, grain matching and vice versa. I think they can be two disciplines even though they are using the same toolsets. Much like in 3d where photorealism and toons are two different things.

Oh yes, very definitely. I'm just not sure that "2d compositor" is referring to motion graphics....

maybe "2d compositor" is deals with everything a normal compositor would minus any 3d/multi-pass rendering integration

well technically even if you are dealing with render layers you are still dealing with 2D images. I think there are definitely compositing positions geared more towards the 2D side of things then 3D but I also think every good compositor should know how to do both.

They have specifically asked me for VFX compositing not CG compositing
and this incident occurred to me at a reputed Studio i think they will know the difference between both types of compositibg

I'm just wondering...how come the company is letting you apply for the post of a compositor while you're still a fresher?
Aren't you supposed to start of as a roto/paint artist initially..right??
