I'm with flame on this one. I can't stand using a tablet for anything precise. I'll spend 3 seconds trying to hit a small spinner arrow or mucking about with something that just takes a fraction of a second on the mouse.

It's probably like keyboard layouts. I type at 100+ words a minute so switching to a 'faster' keyboard layout like dvorak would just result in me typing slower. Also I have excellent muscle memory on a mouse. I know exactly how far I have to move it to hit just about any point on the screen.

Lastly: I love the keyboard. And using a keyboard and tablet at the same time for me is borderline impossible and nothing but aggrevation.

I think precision really depends on the size of your tablet. I personally wouldn't use anything smaller then a 6x8 (9x12 is nice). Small ones like 4x5 is useless.

That's a good point. I've only ever really used my 4x5 tablet at home. So, possibly a larger tablet would be easier.

    Hey matt,
How's the bamboo working out for you? Is it good enough to use at home for rotoscoping and painting a few clean plates? I use an Intuos 2 & 3 at work, will I notice a big difference between them and the bamboo?
Also, what sized tablet do you guys recommend for a wide screen monitor (I'm using a 32" HDTV as a computer monitor)? Keep in mind that I need it just for practicing at home.
    Thanks

I use a black bamboo and its pretty great. But after maybe a month of use, you'll be desperately wanting more control, angle sensitivity, and overall more sensitivity in the pen. For travel, its absolutely a necessity. Its compact enough to fit in a bag with your laptop or whatever and do some quick stuff. For big projects that you can work on at home with a nice big screen, I'd highly recommend something better than the bamboo.

If I understand correctly, the bamboo was created to fill the gap between intro tablet users and the more advanced, and it does the job quite well.

For $1k (possibly $700 on ebay if you look hard, thats how my friend grabbed one) you can grab one of the new cinitq's. Its the smallest cintiq out there and has a screen in it. The resolution is so good you can get a dual use out of it and use it as a second travel monitor. Not too bad, plus all of the really nice pen and tablet features that come with all the cintiq models.

    Well Brian,
the cheapest cintique (DTZ-1200W 12.1 inch) is for about Rs73,800 or USD 1640 + taxes, which is way over my budget considering I just need something to practice at home.
The bamboo fun (CTE-650 A5 size) is for about Rs 9999 or USD 222 + taxes
I don't really want to spend more than about $400 for a tablet.

I was talking about the cintiq 12wx: http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/12WX.cfm

but man, with those kinds of prices... I think you should go with a bamboo. Good luck.

    Hey Bryan,
(Sorry for spelling your name incorrectly), I checked out the Bamboo today, and wasn't really impressed by it, so Ive decide to go for Intuos 3 A5 wide (6x11). The only problem is that it cost about $450-470 here. How much is it for in the States? If the price difference is significant, I guess I'll have someone pick it up from there instead.

RSI is the biggest motivator for me. I talked my old work into buying me a Graphire3 a couple of years back because I started getting sharp pains in my hand muscles. (This was using Pinnacle Liquid, which was quite a point-and-click intensive app.) One solid month to learn the tablet and there's no looking back. I use a 9x12 Intuos3 at work across 2 screens, but a 6x8 Bamboo or Graphire will be just fine.

I tried to look for the Graphire series, but I couldn't find any local dealers who still had them in stock. I actually need one for a 1920x1080 resolution display, so I doubt it whether a Bamboo will cut it. What about a 6x11 intuos3? Or will I need a 9x12 size?

the A5 wide is a lovely size for 1920x1080. I'd be very hesitant to got for a bigger one.

Great, so I guess I'll got for the 6x11 then. I checked out the price at Amazon...it was about $345. Too bad they don't ship it internationally
Better start hunting the local computer hardware stores for a good price.
    Thanks for the suggestion guys

My Intuos4 Medium just arrived. Looks like roto will never be the same!
Thanks to everybody on the forum for helping me make the decision.

Wow, I can even scroll the parameter window! My wrist is already smiling.

    Best wishes,
    Les

So, I have a relevant question:

I have a tablet laptop, HP Pavilion tx2525nr, do any of you know a way that I can link this to say a desktop and use the tablet portion of my laptop as sort of a cintiq for my desktop?

    Appreciate any help with this
