RAID question

Hello everybody,

this year is going to be my last at the Uni and there will probably be lots of HD editing, so I was thinking about building a RAID.. The thing is that I'm no hardware guru and I really need your advice..

I was thinking about building RAID 5.. As far as I know there should be at least 4 hard drives.. How they would be connected to each other? would be there a need for any other hardware?

please shine some light on this topic if you can..

Basically, you need a RAID controller. Some motherboards will have this onboard. Most people buy a dedicated PCI or PCI-express RAID controller card. All of your drives connect to the RAID controller, and then youusually have to do a little initial setup to configure your RAID array, and select which RAID mode, etc. Then, have fun with it.

You may want to consider having a drive not on the RAID for booting, the OS, and all your apps. That way, when the RAID eventually flakes out and starts throwing away data, you just loose your footage, but you can get the machine working again quickly. (Maybe my experience is just based on not spending enough on RAID controllers over the years... )

I have my OS and comp-programs on a raptor and my working files on a raid setup (2x250gb in raid 0). And it's working great. I had som issues under the installation because it was my first time setting it up, but it wasn't really hard.

First I had to create a new OS-cd with RAID drivers on it, also called slipstreaming.

Then I set up the raid using the bios raid menu. And I could then boot the cd I created.
