A table and gnomon DVDs will be a great start and will help you develop the skills - but keep those pencils close to you on the night stand as general drawing skill will help a lot as well.

Hi.. I've been using photoshop for my postcard printing service/business. I bought a Gnomon dvd and it really helped me. You should get one.

For the character stuff just do a quick search for "tutorialized". They have excellent photoshop drawing tutorials. Also a very creative option (i've seen this used in many Theatre flyers) is photoshop's built-in brush tool. Learn how to "load brushes" and then download lots of "free brushes" (use a search engine to find pages for the words in quotes) and you'll open up a whole new world of creativity!
