    And why?

I personally switched from AE 5.5 to Fusion 3.12a having tried Combustion 1.2 for a month.
The main benefits were: the ability to build a complex yet readable composition easily, user-friendly and effective rotoscoping, tracking, color correction tools, Text+, amazing particles.

Why Fusion? I guess it makes sense if you switched from AE 5.5

Well, I think Fusion is still better for compositing
Even if compare CS4 to DF3.12

I was hinting that most packages would be a step up from AE 5.5, not just Fusion.

considering that combustion is up to version 2008 right now after effects is at
version 9 and fusion is about to release version 6
in my opinion you need to try the new versions of all thous packages in order to make an educated decision that being said i agree with donaldStrubler .. anything is a step up from AE 5.5

Of coarse, I tried. Just wanted to be specific describing when I switched.
If you compare the current versions of these packages, you'll get almost the same result.

P.S. Do you see a lot of differences between C*1.2 and C*2008?

After you know fusion why you want to switch to AE... because Fusion is a complete compositing package with amazing manual particles.. AE is really good for motion graphics but Fusion is good for Compositing..

I use both AE and Fusion (started with DFX+ 3). AE I use for quick stuff and animation, Fusion for more complex things and effects.

AE is very nice for timing and animation, I wish Fusion would've some of those features.

What features specifically? We are always looking to improve our application with User feedback. If you have a specific request, and can explain how you want a feature to work, and why you want it to work that way, send it to us! All workflow improvements can be sent to requests at eyeonline dot com.

    Thanks

My wishes are already on Wishlist and I think I've sent them to requests too. Some kind of feature voting would be nice, then you would know what's most wanted. Currently people just check Wishlist and if it's there, they don't bother asking it again.

Here is a poll for the most wanted features which was created some time ago:
    http://www.pigsfly.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4951

Would be great if the main Wishlist had a drop-down list next to each request where people could select it's importance (-1 to 5: -1 if the feature is harmful, 5 if it's very important). Total score against every line would show the priority.
