The VES nominations have been released a tad early it seems by the Hollywood Reporter, which is claiming James Cameron’s “Avatar” led the list of nominations scoring 11 nominations.

The animated “Coraline,”also released in Stereo, followed with four nominations.

New Zealand-based Weta Digital, which worked on “Avatar,” led the company noms with nine.

For visual effects in an effects-driven motion picture feature, the nominees are “2012,” “Avatar,” “District 9,” “Star Trek” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

Noms for supporting visual effects in a movie went to “Angels & Demons,” “The Box,” “Invictus,” “The Road” and “Sherlock Holmes.”

“9,” “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” “Caroline,” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” and “Up” were nominated for outstanding animation in an animated feature.

VES noms in 20 categories, covering film, animation, TV, commercials and video games were chosen Saturday by blue-ribbon panels of VES members, meeting in Burbank, San Francisco and London.

Los Angeles, January 19, 2010 – The Visual Effects Society (VES) today announced the nominees for the 8th Annual VES Awards ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects artistry in over twenty categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games. Nominees were chosen Saturday, January 16, 2010, by numerous blue ribbon panels of VES members who viewed submissions at the FotoKem screening facilities in Burbank and San Francisco as well as at other facilities in London, Sydney and Vancouver.

“The Visual Effects Society is proud to present these nominations as the most outstanding work in the field this year,” said Jeffrey A. We congratulate them all and look forward to seeing who is chosen as the best of the best at the awards show in February.”

Still think it's a shame Where the Wild Things Are missed the boat. Think it shows how strong this year's entries are with avatar, D9, 2012 etc etc...

I was suprised Where The Wild Things Are didn't get a mention. It should have at least got into the "best supporting effects" catagory but there was also some great animation in there.

Why is it that Avatar is listed twice in the same category sometimes?

Some category's are for best sequence or shot etc. So it can be nominated for multiple sequences within the film.

I was on one of the nominating panels last Saturday, and I didn't see any entries from "Where the Wild Things Are" (at least not in any category I was judging.) A film must be entered by filling out an entry form and paying an entry fee. The entries are vetted to ensure that they qualify in the category they are entered in. The qualified entries are then screened by a nominating panel made up of VES members experienced in that particular category. A select number of nominees are chosen (see list above), and then the entire VES membership may vote for the final winners (that vote will occur in a few weeks.)

Perhaps the film was entered in other categories and was not nominated, or else they chose not to enter it.

In the past, the "Best Single Visual Effect of the Year" category could include a single shot, or a related sequence of shots. This year, the definition was narrowed to a single shot (i.e. cut to cut.) The range of entries was enormous! There were 27 qualified entries, and they ranged from 3 seconds in length to almost 3 minutes long! It was extremely difficult to narrow it down to 5 choices, since the quality of entries was outstanding this year.

This year, there were VES nominating panels in Australia, England, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. After voting on this category in the 4 locations, there was actually a tie, which we in Los Angeles had to break since we voted last. The tie was between a shot from Harry Potter and a shot from Avatar. The shot from Avatar won the tie-breaker, and that is why there are 2 nominations from the film in this category.

You know what I don't get? This.. Out of 20 spots, only four are actual artists (one lighting td, two compers, one fx td). The rest are supervisors or producers. How does one single visual effect of the year warrant VFX Supes and Producers on the list? I would think that the artists were more vital. Supes and Producers have different awards, like overall vfx ones.

Best Single Visual Effect of the Year

    2012 – Escape from L.A.

    John Knoll, Visual Effects Supervisor
Frank Losasso Petterson, Simulation Technical Director
    Tory Mercer, Compositor

    AVATAR
    Thelvin Cabezas, Lighting Technical Director
    Joyce Cox, VFX Producer
Joe Letteri, Senior Visual Effects Supervisor
