    The Challenge

Through The Looking Glass to Underland

There is a place, like no place on earth. A land full of wonder, mystery and danger. Some say to survive it you need to be as mad as a hatter ….. Others say all you need is to gain ownership of Underlands ruling crown .....

Your best friend Alice Kingsley has disappeared during a garden party being held in the honour of her engagement to Hamish Ascot. A message has reached you via the White Rabbit that Alice has been spirited away to the magical underground world of Wonderland, or Underland as it is also known.

The White Rabbit has informed you that to assist Alice’s return to the real world you will need to follow her to Wonderland and help her to steal back the White Queens ruling crown from the Red Queen . Luckily a portal exists to the mysterious Underland through a large ornate looking glass, which leans against a wall in the dusty attic of Alice’s childhood home.

VFXTalk challenge you to create the character of Alice’s childhood friend, using the supplied footage, and take her through the looking glass in search of the White Queens ruling crown.

Here's the finalized version. The outdoor scenes were camera-projected, using three high resolution photos. The body & clothings for Alice's friend were created as 3D objects and comped with the supplied footage.

Modelling, texturing, rigging, animating, camera projections, comping, and post-effects were all done by using Blender 2.5 and Gimp. (Hand textures were done by using Blender 4.9, and some gamma corrections were applied at the final editing stage by using Adobe Premiere.) As for editing and recording, Adobe Premiere and SONAR were used.

If you go to my WIP tread, you'll be able to see a lot of time-lapsed captures of how I made the scenes--as if you are sitting in front of my computer screen.

My best wishes for all participants.

    Hey all,

This is Team Cilantro, (Rob Price, Tony Lyons, and Chase Bickel). This is our final submission for the VfxTalk 402 Challenge "Through the Looking Glass".

We used Adobe Photoshop for textures and mattepainting, Autodesk Maya for 3D, and The Foundry's Nuke for Compositing.

You can see our progress if you go to our WIP thread here.

We posted a few screengrabs and before and afters. The befores are of the CG straight out of maya, and the afters are all the finished comps.

    Hope you guys enjoy!

Had to cut some corners. This is all I could squeeze in in time.

Used Maya 7 for camera projections. After Effects for comping and Premiere to edit. Also photoshop for the matte paintings.

(Edit) Had to fix the colors a bit. I would also like to thank the photographers on Flickr for making their wonderful photos available to the public. Fabian Schilder (snapsi42), mibreit, jerine
