its not really about cash, as at the end of the day the $50 a week we get doesnt pay the bills!

the pro's dont want to be hasstled by the newbies when working on projects, and rightfully so... ! isnt that the way it always is?

the newbies have the other 90% of the site so its only fair to give the pros somewhere they can call their own and that they can gert serious work done.

at the end of the day, vfxtalk is a serious place and we want to help people with their projects... its the real value we have.

Although I have access to those forums but how about making them only read for non paying members?

I really liled the fact that on chaosgroup's forums, even if you are not a customer you're still able to read what's going on inside. And you can post on some open ones as well.
BTW, cgtalk just removed the paying forums because they were dead or almost.

hmm good idea... however these are not really paying forums they are professional forums, for VIP members and for VES membes as well... we dont make any money off VES members.

would it be a lot of trouble (time) for the mods to do some kind of "background check"?
like imdb credits, or a professional showreel (for people that don't work in film/tv, but let's say TVC/Games) or something means you can access/post on the pro sections of the forum.
I would support the idea of "newbies" to be able to read those forums though.

Well maybe they want only VES members,it would be difficult to evaluate if people are pros or not, maybe sending invoices would do the job lol.

Of course Buying a membership dont make you a pro,but if they want only VES people how cares, people are the forum not admins or high top notch you are not so good as me pros.

As long as we can post in some areas cool for me,better leave the people with high levels of self esteem in one place lol.

The Professional Forums were eventually going to be membership only, but there was never a time frame.. VES members and VIP members have access. If you are a VES member, put your number into your profile, one of the mods will check it with VES, and open it up.

If you're not a VES member, the only other way is through VIP membership, which gives you access to those forums. There was many a discussion on what to provide in there, and I think we may narrow down the choices soon. If VIP and VES members want to post more in those sections for more professional artists, please do so, you'll most likely get a more dedicated reply. When I say professional artists, I'm simply talking about artists that have more than a couple years under their belt, and may not get the answers they're looking for in the general forums.

I personally prefer this site, VFXTalk, over CGtalk because like others have mentioned, there is just a bit too much fluff and politics over there, and I try to keep some of that away from here.

Given that the Professional section is now offlimits to most readers, is it possible that what constitutes that section could be reconsidered? Specifically, I'm not certain of the logic of grouping Pre-Production in with the exclusive stuff. It seems like a non-professional wanting to start a project would belong in the Pre-Production forum. Since every project goes through pre-production, it isn't obvious that only the pros should have a place to discuss such things.
I never seem to notice 'visitor' messages until months later. In theory, a PM should email me to let me know I have a message.

True, most professional pre-production doesn't really use the forum to describe their plans. Maybe just supervision would be ideal, and create something else for the other audience.
