When doing roto of an element that is in contact with the ground, is it a good idea to roto part of the contact shadow of the object resting on the ground? Or do you want to stick to just the object and comp a shadow in later?

see the attached picture for an example of what I mean.

    Yeah, I'm new.

    Thanks

You may be able to key the contact shadows with some loose garbage mattes, and that might give you a better result than straight roto.

I was wondering if it should be done at all? Is this a common practice and should be done every time when dealing with this situation, or should I ignore the shadows completely?

ey! nice question! I guess that you have to leave some residual shadow to avoid a straight mask, but you think that you can add some shadow lately with a vfx software. So I guess that it is how it works.

i usualy roto the foot, and then roto the shadow seperatly to plug that in a CC on my background plate because the underlaying surface usualy isn't the same as the surface you're rotoing from

    Thanks everyone!

    Tagger,
That is what I was thinking of doing but just wasn't sure. You confirmed what a teacher of mine suggested earlier today, which is to roto the shadow separately and have it available for later down the pipeline. I appreciate the advice.
