Kick Ass - Community Critique & Review

Starring: Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong, Evan Peters, Lyndsy Fonseca.

    Directed by: Matthew Vaughn
Produced by: Matthew Vaughn, Brad Pitt, Kris Thykier, Adam Bohling, Tarquin Pak

    Plot Outline:
“How come nobody’s ever tried to be a superhero?”

When Dave Lizewski – ordinary New York teenager and rabid comic-book geek dons a green-and-yellow internet-bought wetsuit to become the no-nonsense vigilante, Kick-Ass, he soon finds an answer to his own question: because it hurts. But, overcoming all the odds, the eager yet inexperienced Dave quickly becomes a phenomenon, capturing the imagination of the public.

However, he’s not the only superhero out there – the fearless and highly-trained father-daughter crime-fighting duo, Big Daddy and Hit Girl have been slowly but surely taking down the criminal empire of local Mafioso, Frank D’Amico. And, as Kick-Ass gets drawn into their no-holds-barred world of bullets and bloodletting with Frank’s son, Chris, now reborn as Kick-Ass’s arch-nemesis, Red Mist – the stage is set for a final showdown between the forces of good and evil – in which the DIY hero will have to live up to his name. Or die trying ......

Dave Lizewski is a social misfit, a natural-born geek, a true nobody at his high school and he is invisible to all the girls. He has two good friends, Toddy and Marty, and spends his time at the local comic book store. He is in love with a girl called Katie Deauxma but she barely notices his existence. One day, after a conversation about superheroes at the local comic book café, Dave and Toddy are robbed and Dave decides that he is going to be a superhero and fight crime. He orders a Diving wet suit off the internet and starts training to become a real crime fighter.

After a few weeks of training, Dave sees the two men who robbed him trying to break into a car so Dave puts on his suit and confronts them. He tries to fight the men but ends up being brutally stabbed; and as he stumbles around after the thugs run away, he is hit by a car. Clinging to life in the back of an ambulance, he begs the paramedic to hide his suit. As he ends up arriving at the hospital completely naked, rumours start up around town about what exactly happened to him before his accident happened.

A few months later, Dave is almost as good as new. He is full of metal plates and has numerous frayed nerve endings which grant him a higher pain threshold. He returns to school and is surprised to find that the true love of his life, Katie, is now talking to him. His friend Marty explains that Katie likes lame ducks and that due to rumours following the accident, the entire school now thinks that Dave is a gay prostitute. Despite the setbacks, Dave is still determined to be a superhero and sets up a MySpace account so that people can contact him and give him cases. One night, while looking for a cat, Dave fights off three attackers beating a defenceless man in front of a diner. Some of the diner patrons record the fight on video and posts it on YouTube. The power of social networking kicks in, and Daves alter ego, Kick Ass, becomes an internet phenomenon.

Thus Dave Lizewski embarks on a life as a super-hero, albeit a super-hero with no powers. His life changes forever as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, embattles an array of violent characters, and encounters other vigilantes in the shape of an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo: Hit Girl; and her father, Big Daddy.

Kick-Ass was heralded as a humourous, entertaining, rollercoaster of a superhero movie ....... with a big difference. Have you seen Kick-Ass? did you agree with all the hype and the positive reviews? post below with your critique, we would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm not really sure why so many people loved this movie.

The main character was a complete wuss and very unlikeable. Nick Cage was embarrassing in his Adam West impersonation...McLovin was pretty annoying..the villians were out of a power rangers episode and yet there were F-Bombs flying left and right.

It was like it wanted to cater to a 12 year old demo, but didn't understand how to so it went for the 18 year old instead.

The bright colors also reminded me of power rangers...yet it wasn't satire, it really took itself seriously.

The little girl was the best part of the film and should have been the central story (even tho her costume was ridiculous)

Overall a pretty boring film for what could have been entertaining.

    Well I loved it.
And I loved it for all the reasons Gentle Fury hated it.
I loved that the main character was a complete wuss. I loved the cagemeister's geeky dork. I couldn't stand the Red Mist character - which was a good thing. He'll be a villian that I'll love to hate. I loved the power rangers (Still watch Linkara's history of the power rangers) And I love it when characters swear out of the blue. Because that to me is a touch of reality in what could have been truly campy dialogue.
The little girl was awesome. Fucking awesome. And her character should have een the central story.... but then we'd have missed out on the wonderful character development of that wuss Kick-Ass learning what it meant to be a real hero with honour, debt and sacrifice.
Overall a pretty entertaining film, for what could have been boring.

(I didn't ever see the power rangers connection when watching the movie, but in hindsight, maybe that's why I liked it so much... I'd kill to see a darker grittier power rangers movie)

    Hi jah,

I worked on the Rasul house sequence where Hitgirl kills everyone, the fire sequence and some other bits.
I've got a new showreel, i just need to render it out and put it on vimeo. I might even be able to put some before/after things on there.
I'll keep you posted, i'm just a bit swamped with Narnia at the moment.
