hi, hope someone can help me out. im a video editor and a digital compositor.
im using avid and combustion and thinking of buying a pc Amd athalon 64 for my needs.
im trying to find what is the best and off course affordable price for a graphic card. I found out and being suggested to buy the "PNY Quadro FX 500"
i found out also the MATROX PARhelia 128MB which cost almost double.
the matrox cost $400 but since its expensive and a bit old i dont know if there are other graphics card with the same price but with better performances.. i was trying to find out and hope that someone here know better and can help me out. im willing to spent up to $400 but i dont know if there are better for the same price.
Is the pny fx 500 ok too? i saw it doesnt have tv out so this is why i was trying to find out other and end up with the matrox. i know about NVIDIA but not sure what is good for that needs all i saw is about games ...
Ill be very happy if someone can suggest me what to do or any other tips regarding the hardware for the AMD.
    Thanks a lot

    Ok Paul. Just for you!
some days ago I told my friend kelthuzad that I own a AMD 64 3200 and I have the strong feeling that a PIV is faster when rendering and encoding.
I also said that a good Radeon Card (a 9800 type) could be the right choice, considering that a plugin like cyberzeka works at its best with that card.
ok, I hope this post will last on the forum for at least 20 minutes!

    Bye to you all, ciao!

    Hey Mate,

I would recommend the nVidia 6800GT ...its OpenGL performance in combustion is exceleltn and it really is an awesome card ...

As for CPUs ... I am an Intel Loyalist ....its just stronger when crunching the numbers ....but you wount go wrong with an AMD either ... the Graphics card is alot more important

    cheers,
    paul

The biggest /baddest you can afford.....you will need to choose if you are going agp 8 or PCI Express.(PCI Express would be my choice). Then look at the proggys you plan to use. Do you want to use the computer as a gaming machine?
Chosse a lower end gaming card, lose the highend gl features.

Do you want to use the computer as a comp machine?
Look at the recommended systems for you software.!!!

Now you said edit in the same sentance as 3d/comp....here we are stuck, most edit machines need robust Dir X while 3d needs GL.

Evil middle-ground..Either a ati or a nvidia(9800 and up nvid geforce 4 and up) will help you here and you will be able to play games ,but you will have bugs with either.

I'll go for Nvidia 6800 GT or even Ultra, it can be tweaked to Quadro (slightly slower than original, but with extra GL features). Ati causes problems with pro 3D sometimes, it's mostly gaming card nowadays.

Hmmm, so nvidia beats radeon at graphics use nowadays? How is the picture quality in 2d?

I am mostly using ae and seems like im going to buy 6800le or 6600gt. OR, should i wait for pci-e if i can fix my budget? What that brings for compositing and 3d, and maybe some gaming...
