    hi guys,

im a new member here. it is nice to meet you on this forum. I wonder, how long does it take to transform from flame into nuke? to get know and fully understand, because used to be i am a flame and smoke artist, until now.

i saw the demo videos on the foundry's site--everything is about channel management in nuke. Correct me if i am wrong---and hope this forum will helps me a lot.

    thank you very much

most of the tools (CC, filters, 3d, vector paint) are fairly similar, just read through the documentation to get an idea

you dont have a proper timeline to do editing and of course no desktop. The Keyers (Keylight, Primatte, IBK) work a bit different then your standard Discreet Keyers.

It helps to understand the concept of channels inside nuke, as well as color management, but you are very wrong in believing "everything is about channel management". In fact, you can still work with RGBA most of the time if you prefer

I would give it a go, will probably take you 1-2 weeks

    have fun

Doing the same here, but not migrating, just learning a new tool.

Markus, I think your 1-2 week estimation is a little bit optimistic, I wouldn't start real work after single week of learning. At the same time I have to admit that I have to learn everything alone, there is no nuke guru sitting next to me.

By the way I checked your site, your career path and have a question.
I was on an MPC interview recently (actually it was a chat on the roadshow).
When it turned out that I have no working experience with nuke, I was asked if I would start in the roto&prep department. Did you start the same way? Or did you have some nuke skills previously?

    cheers

Do you have experience with film pipelines? That might also be a reason that you'd start in the roto/prep dept.
I'd imagine that you would move up quite quickly if you're a good flame compositor.

    Hey welcome djati

The Nuke forum will be very helpful indeed.

Access to video tutorials will make things easier than the manual.
Besides here,Consider doing a course/term at fxphd and see if that model of education can help you transit faster.

Things that will take some getting used to
    1.No desktop
    2.No node kissing
    3. 2D tracking will take a few extra steps and will feel clumsy
    4. 3D system is not implicit like in action. You explicitly put 3d cards, merges etc down
5.Roto / paint is not quite there in Nuke

effortlessly navigating Flame is what i miss most (as opposed to nuke)

Play with Nuke for a month to get used to it's 3d system, python scripts etc It will get easier but you wont forget your flame in a hurry

all ^ are ime and ymmv.
    Cheers

    hi Boomji

thanks for your good info, i ll check on fxphd for registeration and also the videos on the foundry's channel. Leaving flame? nope, i love my flame too--here we just bought the nuke and maybe later with storm--to conform RED materials, because here the situation is most productions running with the Red camera.

i saw some videos on the foundry channel, to comp between the layers sometime it is quite difficult on nuke--maybe i must get used to--not like in flame if i had the alpha just comping --very easy and fast.

but again, i love the 3d workflow in nuke's system and also for stereo jobs--it is awsome.

ok Boomji, thanks for your share i 'd really appreciate it.

    cheers
