  1. #1 District 9 dropship sequence
    Hi everybody!

I'am a student at Lost Boys Learning and we are currently working on our UFO Project.

Therefore i wanted to create a work in progress thread about it.

My UFO Shot will be the Dropship sequence of district 9.

I created a previz animation with the low res plate and a rough model and animation. ( BTW. the dropship is coming out of the ground)

Also i finished modeling the dropship.

    Starting on the textures today.

I'm gonna keep this thread updated frequently.

If you have any questions critics or comments please feel free to respond to this thread. Input from other artists is always highly appreciated.

    Greetings

This was a awesome sequence, really looking forward to seeing how it works out... The ship look scool so far, i think the textures will make it or break it however. Can you let us know what tools you are using there on the project?

Do you have video footage to comp the final against already?

    @ Jah

    Yeah i love this sequence.

For the 3D Part i use Maya. Comp will be done in Nuke.
probably i will have to do some simulations for the smoke trails and explosions.
But it depends on what elements i can shoot practically or if i find good stock footage.
I wanna do most of the effects in comp.

The plate you see in the previz will be my background.
I didn't shoot the plate myself.
    Stock footage from Pond5.

UV-Layout done and basic Textures and Shaders applied.
Working on the Animation right now!
Since there is only 2 weeks left for this project i will focus on the compositing part and continue working on the shaders and textures later.

PS.: I used my plate as background and FG-Dome. Just for Test Purposes.

  7. #7 Critics and Comments Please ;-)
    Finally finished my UFO Project.
Changed the concept a little bit, due to time shortage. If i ahve time later on i probably will come back to the aerial shot. But i wanna do some other shots before i finish at Lost Boys Learning.

So enjoy the shot and of course:

    Critics and Comments are welcome
Im always happy to hear other peoples opinions.

    So don't hold back!

    Thanks in advance

The missile shooting in from out of no where took me by surprise... but it missed... but another one got it! Love the sequence. Cool.
    Nice work.

    Thx i appreciate it!

people keep suggesting i should punch in on the shot for about 150 to 200 percent, would make it look more like news cast footage.

    What do you think?

It looks good. My only input would be with the actual missile hit. It currently looks like the missile shoves the whole airship sharply to the side when in actual fact it'll just cause the engine to explode and the ship to dip down. If you think about how that thing actually flies it's basically a two rotor helicopter with it's weight positioned in the centre. I'd imagine it would flip sideways and then start travelling sideways up from the remaining engine.

Love what you've done with the little lens flare end the DOF at the beginning. Feels natural.

EDIT: wow, I'm quite late to the party :P didn't see the date on the post. haha
