    I just took a look at the Video about Viewport 2. I remember several years ago, when Nvidia introduced a new video card that can show a beautiful Real-time rendering, I thought that the day people don't need to wait for tons of time for rendering, is coming soon.

    Dear God no,i think max will die sooner or later,you can´t mix max and maya ,autodesk dont even touch mental ray,its just a crap load of mixed shaders.

    If it was so crap it wouldn't buy Alias Maya in first place or XSI softimage and every other software around. They buy other softwares and add their features to max and vice versa. Its true that Maya is more suited for movies because it has integrated Fluids simulator, hair simulator while for max you must go another 1000$ to buy fumefx or good hair simulator, which is even better then mayas fluids but it costs a lot. But max has much more plug-ins and user database more rendering engines, and has faster work flow. Max is used by effects everyone thought its made with maya look for example the max guru www.allanmckay.com all these effects that everyone praises maya were done in max and max only. The reason why everyone used maya earlier was it was cheaper now everything is to expensive when Autodesk buyed XSI they made it even more expensive now. All the rendering engines that were max exclusive are coming slowly to maya so its a bit visible the softwares will level each other soon.

    Max = Win only
    Softimage = Win only
    Maya = Mac/Win/Linux

    The primary reason (I believe) that Maya is used in more films by places like Weta and ILM is that it is a platform built for dependability and expandability through custom in-house tools and with it's support for a Linux operating system it can fit into a wide variety of custom high-end workflows as well as fit into the artists or shops preference for an OS. These features are rarely exploited to their fullest by smaller CG houses who instead tend to rely on 3rd party solutions rather than in-house programmers and can build a smaller hardware solution around the software they choose.

    It isn't about the tools you use, it's about the final product. Please stop worrying about what everyone is using because there is no wrong answer here. All these software tools have their strengths and weaknesses and I don't think any one tool is 'better' than any other, they are just different.
