  1. #1 My new Matte Painting
    Hello all,

This is a matte painting I've just finished (I think) for an animation short I'm working on. Any comments / critiques are welcome.

    peace...

I saw this over at CGtalk and I am still in awe of your skill. The lighting, the atmosphere, the composition and color palette are very well done. Did you do this all in photoshop or are there a mixture of 3d elements?

I know it would probably take a while to make one, but if you ever had the time for a small tutorial on your process it would be very helpful. Keep up the good work, and post a link to your short once you get some more done, I'm looking forward to how it will turn out. If the rest of your stuff is anywhere near the quality of your mattes then it should be great.

Yes, a beautiful piece of work. I really like the atmosphere!

What is the theme of your animation?
    Still waiting for the future?

...Thanks for the feedback, guys. Yea, I'll eventually post a tutorial on my site giving pics of progress along the way with the creation of my mattes. I usually start with a 3d background & build up paint layers from there.

...I haven't done any professional work & I will hopefully attach a "yet" to that statement. I'm working on these mattes to serve a dual purpose. They were originally intended to serve as backgrounds for scenes in my animation, but I will also be building a matte portfolio of the paintings alone. ...we'll see.

Seeing this once again I felt I must post once more. This matte is really outstanding and is very professional in its execution. It really does inspire one.

Can't wait for more of your work and tuts.

Fantastic work Christian. Beeing a matte painter myself I have to say that I perfer shifted perspectives, but thats just me. Other than that your lighting is very well executed and your choice of color and blending are very well astablished. Keep up the good work

so you work in 3d then add layers...could you explain which objects were actually created in 3d...do you usually add atmosphere with the layers or is that from the 3d program..what about the details in the debris etc...I must know!!! lol..thats a sweet matte.
