ok, if you posted this for honesty you will get it. For starters (and I say this all too often) it is WAY too long. No experience = 30-45 secs of your all time BEST work EVER!!

No need for breakdowns on all CG shots..I get they are all CG you don't need to show me the passes that went into it...I already know. This reel is also all over the place. What would you like to do? There is no such thing as a comp/vfx artist...they are two completely separate depts. You can make a comp reel for a comp job, and a vfx reel for a vfx job..but nobody is going to hire you as a comp/vfx artist....

Also, please lose the minute or so of you playing in houdini...it makes no sense and demonstrates nothing. It just looks like you turned on a screen recorder while doing a tutorial and sped it up. Demo reel is for finished work. It is to demo your skills.

Also, never include fluid presets...it doesn't look professional. I liked the particles turning into objects...maybe you can turn that into an actual project of some sort.

My best advice is to come up with a short story. Produce it from start to finish (preferably with like minded and skilled friends) and create the best 30 seconds you possibly can.

I totally agree with gentle fury. It is way too long. I do understand what you are doing with the Houdini stuff, but it doesn't need to be in the reel. Do an animation of the cradle on a desk with some nice lighting and some other models if you want to include it.

The main thing that I have been trying to keep in mind is that when we are going to be getting hired in the modern age, whoever is going to be hiring us is going to Google your name before you walk in the door. Get your self a website and put the cradle stuff into a tutorial on there. The you can help the community and show off that you know what you are doing at the same time.

Also, as gentle fury said, try to tailor your reel as much as you can to the job you are trying to get. Make 5, 30 second reels that showcase your skills in narrow disciplines, then send in the appropriate one for the job you are applying to. The extra care can help to set you apart from the rest of the pack. In reality, you will be lucky to get the 30 seconds on the first run through of reels by someone who has to watch 30+ per day, conservatively. Give them something amazing and let them search out a little bit more.

remove the videocopilot shot with sam getting hit by the car .. anyone can follow a tutorial. remove the "no post" sign from fumefx, houdini screens. they are also post-production ... i know you mean straight out of the renderer, with no comping whatsoever, but those are not the words for it, will just look dumb.
and yes, again, too long. i watched your whole reel just because i enjoy the hans zimmer tune.

On a side note you seem to be obsessed with impossibly fast moving skies! The one in the cg shot with the planes stood out as too fast to me and the shot where the name turns into butterflies the shadows on the grass/hills are moving alot faster than the sky

edit* or it is the shadow of the butterflies in which case it still just looks wrong mate

I think your reel is, like gentle said "all over the place". What is your goal? compositing or vfx? you should really concentrate on something because right now it seems you can do a little bit of anything, but not specialized at anything. Like someone else had suggested...remove the videocopilot stuff since a lot of people have that in their reels. Also remove or shorten the houdini particle object morphing segment. It is really long and it is something that has become really trivial in houdini almost to the point of being included as a preset.

My advice is take all that you have learned from tutorials, forums, etc. Spend a day thinking on a single shot you have yet to see in a tutorial or even a movie. Something really interesting and challenging and give it your best shot with your abilities and ask for help as you go along with it and I can guarantee that your skillset will not only vastly improve along the way...you will also define what it is you want to be proefficient at and hopefully develop really good reel material in the end result.

I think the "short" one is still a little to long, i wouldnt go over 1min. Please take out the video copilot stuff. It looks bad for you when you use stuff from a tutorial, especially when its someone like andrew. also, you dont have to show your whole shot, shorten up those butterfly shot and the 2 after it. As stated before by everyone else, what are you going for? theres so much going on in that reel. over all though good work! I look forward to seeing more of your stuff as you progress! Cheers!
