    hello,
    i need a little help.
i'm a fusion user and i am really trying to step into nuke .
    the problem is nuke speed.
every time i am trying to do simple comps, i step back to fusion who render the same comp in 15 min compared to 1 hour in nuke.(simple grades exrs with channels inside vector blurs etc etc)
i tryed to crop only the part in need in the exr because they where 4k and so on ... still no luck
how can u test new stuff and so one when u have to stay and wait minutes for the viewer to refresh?
my machine is i72600 with 16 gb ram and regular 7200 hdd on win7 64 bit
i am doing something wrong, or nuke is slow?
    thx in advance
p.s. my english is not so good so bare with me

Haven't ever messed with Fusion, but it sounds like you need to optimize the exr sequences. Write them out of Nuke using one of the lossless compression algorithms (Zip1, Zip16, or PIZ) and you should have no problems.

I always run into that issue here if I use the original EXRs directly off the farm. They have it set up to automatically convert the sequences using Zip1 I believe. HUGE speed difference.

Fusion may have some faster way of interpreting the data, but again, I've never used it so it's hard to say. With simple comps, even at that resolution you shouldn't be waiting that long.

Hey! I think it might be about multi thread processors... I'm not completely sure, but I think the older versions of nuke (6.2 and below) might not support the full potentials of your cpu... when you render, check your activity monitor.. if the % of cpu used it's really low, it might be that (unless you have 20 read node) what version of nuke are you running?

yeah, there's a good chance you're using bucket EXR files. You'll need to run post conversion of some sort before you can use them at any speed in Nuke (Nuke is optimized for scanline exr)
(I use Nuke to do my post conversions... they're pretty quick to convert... depending on your disk drive speed, uncompressed is probably fastest... but zip1 is probably the best tradeoff for speed/filesize.)
Also - don't forget to be efficient in using your layers. Remove any layers you are not intending to process. ie: a blur on RGBA - fast... a blur on ALL when you have 50 layers- not quite so fast.
basic comps shouldn't take you an hour to render unless you have some 3D or heavy convolves. or a commadore 64.
    Process; Compute: Situation = Unacceptable; /// > Compute: Solution ... > Locating File: Understanding.exe... > ERROR: File not found /// > ... ... ... System = Crashing Process; Load: Default File; ... > Locating File: Rage.exe... > File Found /// > Executing

    thank u
    i will try your suggestions
soon i will add an ssd drive for work .... hope that will help to...because my actual work hdd is a little slow (after a test it against new 7200 drives like seagate baracuda )
    again thx

I agree with dcompz... You have to optimize your exr files. Usually maya store some data's on the black area's. Example if you have object only middle of the frame and rest is black. Nuke read those data's too so that's why nuke getting slow down while handling exr files.

Import your exr into NUKE. Add "curveTool". Choose "autoCrop" and analyze. It will erase unwanted datas. Render out your exr files with
Zip1 compression, don't forget to check "use autoCrop" on write node.
Failure is not an option.. But failure has to be an option...
