It's faster to shoot without having to setup a screen and you get all the natural light with no spill. Sometimes the tradeoff of one less day shooting is worth the price you have to pay to do the Roto in post. One day of shooting on location means you have to pay a certain number of cast and crew, plus catering, lodging, maybe even equipment rentals. Roto costs can be estimated quickly and if it's cheaper to do the roto you wouldn't bother setting up the greenscreen.

    HI,

    Welcome ALL.

Clean Plate wouldn't give you much, a lot of sand moving in the background.
Personally, generally I prefer to go for a roto than keying. Reasons are mentioned above: perfect light, no spill, faster production (they gonna love you on shoot

    Regards

The answer is: Because they have 10,000 people in other countries that can do the roto at a cheaper cost than the cost of the time burned on set for the GS setup.

So like the above people said. Director and production = very happy. Roto is cheap these days. And VFX artists have a more realistic base to start from.

All very common these days. We used zero GS (other than monitors) on all 8 eps of The River.
