Sounds like idiotic question but how can I turn bevel off when I have turned it on?

Do you mean the bevel from the "edit mesh" menu?

In that case, if you still have it in the construction history you can open the object in the attribut editor and walk to the tab of the bevel and make it active.
Then in the lower left of the attribut editor hit the "select" button. After that you can just delete that node.

Or if you just want to disable it temporarily you can open the "node behavior" section of the bevel node and set it to "HasNoEffect"
