I am not having any luck finding any jobs in compositing because I am a junior level artist with no studio/production experience doing compositing. I would not mind relocating to other countries, but those countries want locals only. I have over a years worth of 3D conversion roto experience in features, but apparently I can't find a job doing that either. So now I am going for a plan B. What 3d jobs are mostly in demand with regards to lighting or FX /dynamics? Is there a bigger demand for lighters or a Maya/Realflow FX artist?

where do you live? and what does your reel look like?
maybe we can help you improve your reel, give you some advice and this is better to get a comp job or roto job then trying to get a job in 3d

do you have more experience with 3d then comp? jus asking, because i doubt that you will find a job in FX or ligthing without any experience either

Well clearly you can do the work, but i would suggest getting some of your own work on there. I.e. Not tutorial stuff. Hell, rent a camera and do some of your own shooting, comp onto that. I've never been in a position of hiring people, but i would hazard a guess that once you have seen 50 demos consisting of the same material, you would start hitting the 'next' button. I know i do when i'm digging around Vimeo.

The first shot could be pretty sweet, but i feel you started it and finished halfway through. Plus all that spinning around the 3d envi isn't needed, just a 90 degree rotate would be much nicer.

The 3rd shot - with the kids - again wicked potential, but doesn't feel finished. some of that background could be animated, try adding a shitload more smoke, that one caught-on-camera-element looks kinda lonely!

that all just looks like old fxphd work. You need to go and find some independent stuff to work on otherwise it will just look like every other student/junior reel

on your roto reel you dont show any mattes, would be nice to see them

and try to make something new/diffrent with all the fxphd footage you have

and if you say you know 3d stuff then you can create your own elements for 1 or 2 shots more

and dont give up! try to stay focused on the comp/roto part. and apply, use your network of friends/former coworkers to stay hear of jobs.

agreed it feels like your not trying hard enough.

maya artist are not advertised as maya is a TOOL not a discipline. look for whatever you wanna do, modeling, anim, lighting etc. they use maya.
comp wise you need to pay your dues, show us the conversion and roto shots and get it done under a minute, show me a good roto for an out of focus object a running motion blur object and something i could not key. then pack this onto a dvd and apply at prime focus

I'm a junior artist too and the first thing they tell you is not to put any tutorial stuff in your reel. In the other hand if you have completed those tutorials you can certainly do something different with your own footage... which is pretty much what everyone here has said.
Good luck with the job hunting!
