Perhaps a little off topic, but I'm wondering about the next major release of Nuke/X. Every now and then I tweet the awesome guys at The Foundry a cheeky question about it's whereabouts, and they're not overly secretive about working on it, but don't give much of a clue about eta, understandably.

The above video is pretty awesome, showcasing some stuff 'to come'. The new tracker looks great imo!

So what would you like to see in the next major release?
For me, I'd like fast, easily obtainable depth of field built right into the Scanline Renderer (ala LensCare etc). And a revised CameraTracker, with more advanced features and better manual tracking built right in. It's a great tracker to have in the toolset, but with a few more tweaks I'd personally turn to it a lot more regularly.

Oh man, those are some serious features!!! I could really use that ZBlur NOW!!! I'm doing a project that needs heavy ZBlur and the artifacts are just annoying. I wonder if they made it work well with motion vectors now too...thats always been a challenge...motion blur + DOF.

Lovely new features 'n all, but have they fixed the Curve Editor so it doesn't spaz out when you zoom in to tweak these new tools?

In fact, have they done any work on it?

If you're referring to the issue where the Curve Editor zooms out to fit the whole curve when you are zoomed-in and double-clicked/dragged a point.. that was fixed in Nuke 6.3v7.

Never hurts to buzz the support team about any bugs/features you'd like to see done sooner.

Ah, thanks. Didn't realise that. Sitting on 6.3v5

As soon as my maintenance is current again I'll have the ability to ask questions of them. Hopefully soon.

But the curve editor is a little... empty of Nuke-like nuances in my eyes do you not think?

I've been cheating the zblur with custom bokey by using layers of convolves for years now... but this looks faster... I hope it works with deep images; that'll fix the issues with overlaying objects in different 3D spaces blurring incorrectly... (especially transparent objects)

Mesh builder looks good... (I tried my hand at poission meshing when it came out and generally got giant blobs of nothing out of it.) Of course, it would be nice to have some tools to work with the mesh... I'd like to do some photogrammetry with it for digital set reconstruction. but I'd need it to be pliable... not just something that you make and then can't modify.

GPU accelleration is a welcome addition. anything where the purpose is solely to speed up my existing workflow gets my votes.

Im pretty lay when it comes to hardware. Would you need a quadro card to take advantage of the new elements being added to some of these nodes? Is a quadro card worth it in general for nuke compositing?

at the moment the only benefit from a quadro card with nuke is that you can use nvidias shutter glasses in the viewport for stereo3d work

i doubt that the features in this video need a quadro card. a fast geforce with a lot of cuda cores will be enough for everything GPU accelerated

As long as your card supports CUDA 4, you'll be good.

I went to their Geekfest last night in Los Angeles and some of the R&D they are working on was interesting.

The tracker node is much better and they're working on a snap to marker addition that puts a 2d tracker on every facial marker and then allows you to paint a clean frame that it will then use to do the marker removal. Nothing we can't do manually but it is a time saver.

They tracker will now allow set key frames and like the video shows, there is a neat "traffic light" system to show when your track works and fails.

I'm going to their booth on Thursday where I can hopefully see more.

Also - the beta is due in a month or so.
