I am new to VFX, so I am wondering what everyone thought of Narnia. Is it just me, or was some of the compositing off?

haven't seen the movie yet, but I got a kind of fold-up "postcard" from KFC with my kids toys with shots from the movie and I was very un-impressed with the fur and lighting of the CG. In one shot, the lighting between the Live action didn't match the lighting in the CG which also didn't match the lighting of the matte painting in the background?
But then it's alot easier to scrutinise a still and spot irregularities - perhaps it looks great in motion. Maybe it wasn't even from the film or I'm just going blind....

Looked fantastic, was a dream to watch.Originally Posted by Fobba_Bett

Some of the comping of the children against skies was a bit dodgy - lighting on the foreground didn't quite match the backgrounds....
i have to agree with hugh.
the character animation was by far the best part of the movie. if aslan wasnt up against kong then id say it was the character animation ive seen.
the shot with the children on a mountain ledge thingy over looking narnia was really quiet bad. on top of a ledge 100s of feet in the air with no wind and not a single hair out of place.
i was so disappointed in narnia. like at the end, how can a 13 (or whatever) year old boy withstand the strike of a minotaurs axe with only a crappy shield. hello, broken arm at least!!!
sorry.
I was really confused because the compositing with the centars and Fawn was good but the kids against the sky wasn't. It just seems like they forgot...weird.
I am really new at this but its almost a shame that some of the "magic" of movies is gone when you are alway thinking about the technical stuff, but I guess it goes with the turf.
I loved the part when Ginarrbrik was shot with an arrow! ROFL!
Since this is a vfx site I'll leave bashing the story alone. I agree with everyone else that Aslan was great. I did find it sad however that my daughter was upset with the comp work. Inspite of this she has seen the movie 3 times, that hurts the pocket book.
Because it's a fairytale. That's not an excuse, it's the real explanation.Originally Posted by scwatman

*SPOILERS*
]At the end of the battle, Aslan goes around at the end turning all the stone people back to normal and the little girl heals all the wounds with a magic potion! The movie even has Father Christmas in it!!!
The book was written as a deliberate, allegorical fable about family and morality, it's a completely different approach to the grittier sort of "fantasy" stories we've had more often, broken arms etc. are just not part of the approach.
I thought 90% of the FX were great, especially the CGI leg replacements. Amazing, flawless stuff.
im going to agree with you about that shot but.....the shot with the children on a mountain ledge thingy over looking narnia was really quiet bad. on top of a ledge 100s of feet in the air with no wind and not a single hair out of place.
you could say the same thing about king kong...how would ann darow be able to be on the top of the empire state building in the middle of winter wearing a slip dress with her air just fluttering in the wind? mmm her hair would be going nuts...and she might even fly off the building(maybe not but its always a possiblity...) and in that dress in winter? could you see kong's breath or ann's up there I can't remember if you could or not...but i am going to go ahead and assume its cold enough to see their breath on the top of the empire state building...but since it is a movie thats why that kind of stuff works and doesn't bother the average audience member...

Definately - I thought that Mr Tumnus stood out both for the acting and the amazing CG involved.....Originally Posted by stevenbray1
